Tagore Sculpture Controversy
Tagore Sculpture Controversy was an incident in the campus area of Dhaka University, Bangladesh. On 14 February 2023, a temporary sculpture of Rabindranath Tagore was installed there by some student to make people aware of various issues in the country. But the university authority silently removed it and later showed the reason of installing without taking prior permission. Later, the broken pieces of the sculpture were found in a shed near the campus, drawing criticism from the authority. Background On 14 February 2023, during the Ekushey Book Fair, the students of the faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, installed a sculpture of Rabindranath Tagore was in front of the Anti Terrorism Raju Memorial Sculpture at Teacher-Student Centre. Rabindranath Tagore
Rabindranath Tagore (; bn, রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর; 7 May 1861 – 7 August 1941) was a Bengali polymath who worked as a poet, writer, playwright, composer, philosopher, social reformer and painter. He reshaped Bengali literature and music as well as Indian art with Contextual Modernism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Author of the "profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful" poetry of ''Gitanjali'', he became in 1913 the first non-European and the first lyricist to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Tagore's poetic songs were viewed as spiritual and mercurial; however, his "elegant prose and magical poetry" remain largely unknown outside Bengal. He was a fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society. Somoy Television () is a Bangladeshi Bengali-language satellite and cable 24-hour Bengali television channel, headquartered at 89, Bir Uttam CR Dutta Road, Banglamotor, Dhaka. It has a broadcast NOC license from the government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. After a test transmission on 10 October 2010, it has been commercially on-air since 17 April 2011. Bangladesh Nationalist Party
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party ( bn, বাংলাদেশ জাতীয়তাবাদী দল, Bangladesh Jātīyotābādī Dol; BNP) is a centre-right to right-wing nationalist, political party in Bangladesh and one of the major political parties of Bangladesh. It was founded on 1 September 1978 by former Bangladeshi President Ziaur Rahman after the Presidential election of 1978, with a view of uniting the people with a nationalist ideology. Ajoy Dasgupta ( bn, অজয় দাশগুপ্ত; born 9 March 1950) is a freedom fighter for Bangladesh Liberation War. He is a journalist, writer, and lecturer at the University of Dhaka and Jagannath University. Hamiduzzaman Khan
Hamiduzzaman Khan (born ) is a Bangladeshi artist and sculptor. He is well known as a sculptor for his theme and form oriented sculptures, in particular sculptures on the theme of Bangladesh War of Liberation and birds. Following the introduction of modernity in sculpture in Bangladesh in the 1950s by Novera Ahmed, Khan was instrumental in the popularization of sculpture in the country through his distinctive form of modernity. Syed Anwar Husain ( bn, সৈয়দ আনোয়ার হোসেন; 5 November 1947) is a Bangladeshi academic and historian. He is a former Director General of Bangla Academy. He is the President of Bangladesh Itihas Samiti. Early life and education Husain was born on 5 November 1947 to a Bengali Muslim family claiming to be Syeds from the Bogra District in Rajshahi Division, Dominion of Pakistan. He has a bachelor's and master's from the University of Dhaka. He also has a masters in international history from the University of Edinburgh. East Pakistan was a Pakistani province established in 1955 by the One Unit Scheme, One Unit Policy, renaming the province as such from East Bengal, which, in modern times, is split between India and Bangladesh. Shaheed Minar, Dhaka
The Shaheed Minar ( bn, শহীদ মিনার ''Shohid Minar'' lit. "Martyr Monument") is a national monument in Dhaka, Bangladesh, established to commemorate those killed during the Bengali Language Movement demonstrations of 1952 in then East Pakistan. On 21 and 22 February 1952, students from Dhaka University and Dhaka Medical College and political activists were killed when the Pakistani police force opened fire on Bengali protesters who were demanding official status for their native tongue, Bengali. The massacre occurred near Dhaka Medical College and Ramna Park in Dhaka.
