Taekwondo At The 2023 Pan American Games
Taekwondo competitions at the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile are scheduled to be held between October 21 and 24, 2023 at the Contact Sports Center, located in Santiago. 13 medal events are scheduled to be contested. Ten of these events are in Kyorugi (five per gender). In March 2023, PanamSports added a men's and women's team events to the sports program in the Kyorugi division. A total of 136 athletes are scheduled to compete. Qualification A total of up to 136 taekwondo athletes will qualify to compete. Each nation may enter a maximum of 10 athletes (eight in Kyorugi and two in Poomsae). The host nation, Chile, automatically qualifies the maximum number of athletes (8) and is entered in each event. There will also eight wild card spots awarded in Kyorugi and two in Poomsae. The spots will be awarded at the qualification tournament held in Rio de Janeiro in March 2023. Taekwondo competitions at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru were held between July 26 to 29, 2019 at the Polideportivo Villa El Salvador, which also hosted the volleyball competitions. 12 medal events were contested. Eight of these events were in Kyorugi (four per gender). This edition marked the premiere of the pomsae events. These events were added after the request of the Organizing Committee as it understood that the chances of medal at this sport were very low for the host country. Carl Nickolas
Carl Alan Nickolas Jr. (born July 18, 2001), also known as CJ Nickolas, is an American taekwondo practitioner. He won the silver medal in the men's welterweight event at the 2023 World Taekwondo Championships held in Baku, Azerbaijan. He is also a two-time gold medalist at the Pan American Taekwondo Championships. Career Nickolas competed in the men's featherweight event at the 2019 World Taekwondo Championships held in Manchester, United Kingdom. He was eliminated in his second match. A few months later, he lost his bronze medal match in the men's 68kg event at the 2019 Pan American Games held in Lima, Peru. In 2021, Nickolas won the gold medal in the men's 80kg at the Pan American Taekwondo Championships held in Cancún, Mexico.
