Taekwondo At The 2012 Summer Olympics
Taekwondo competitions at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London was held from 8 August to 11 August at the ExCeL London. Competition was held in eight weight categories; four for men, and four for women. Qualification The Taekwondo competition at the 2012 Games included 128 athletes, 64 in each gender, 16 in each of the eight weight divisions. Each competing nations were allowed to enter a maximum of four competitors, two of each gender. Each nation would therefore be eligible to compete in a maximum of half the weight categories. Four places were reserved for Great Britain as host nation, and a further four was invitational as decided by the Tripartite Commission. The remaining 120 places were allocated through a qualification process, in which athletes won quota places for their respective nation. Steven López (born November 9, 1978) is an American taekwondo competitor, a 2000 and 2004 Olympic gold medalist (in the -68 and -80 kg divisions, respectively) and a 2008 Olympic bronze medalist (again in the -80 kg division) and 4th Dan in taekwondo. In 2001, he won the Lightweight Taekwondo World Championship, and in 2003 he won the Welterweight Taekwondo World Championship which he has since won in 2005, 2007 and 2009 making him the first Taekwondo fighter to win 5 World Championships. Servet Tazegül ( (born 26 September 1988) is a world, Olympic and European champion Turkish taekwondo practitioner of Azerbaijani origin competing in the featherweight division. He competed in the men's 68 kg class at the 2008 Summer Olympics held in Beijing, China and won the bronze medal. Óscar Muñoz
Óscar Luis Muñoz Oviedo (born 9 May 1993) is a Colombian taekwondo practitioner who won a bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the -58 kg weight class. This was the fifth Olympic medal for Colombia at the 2012 Summer Olympics, and the first medal in this sport. Lee Dae-Hoon (; ; born February 5, 1992) is a South Korean taekwondo athlete. He won a bronze medal in the 2016 Summer Olympics and a silver in the 2012 Summer Olympics. Anthony Obame Mylann (born 10 September 1988 in Libreville, Gabon) is a taekwondo practitioner who represented Gabon at the 2012, 2016 and 2020 Summer Olympics. Obame has been coached by former two-time world champion Juan Antonio Ramos. He won the silver medal in the men's 80+ kg category at the 2012 Olympic Games, becoming the first Gabonese athlete to win a medal at the Olympics. Rohullah Nikpai
Rohullah Nikpai (; born June 15, 1987) is a taekwondo practitioner and two-time Olympic bronze medalist from Afghanistan. As of 2024, he is the only Afghan athlete to have won a medal at the Olympics. In 2023, he became the coach of New Zealand’s national taekwondo team.
