Taekwondo At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's 49 Kg
The women's 49 kg competition in taekwondo at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. It took place on August 20, 2008 at the Beijing Science and Technology University Gymnasium. Competition format The main bracket consisted of a single elimination tournament, culminating in the gold medal match. Two bronze medals were awarded at the taekwondo competitions. A repechage was used to determine the bronze medal winners. Every competitor who lost to one of the two finalists, competed in the repechage, another single-elimination competition. Each semifinal loser, faced the last remaining repechage competitor from the opposite half of the bracket in a bronze medal match. The Beijing Science and Technology University Gymnasium () is an indoor arena located on the campus of the University of Science and Technology Beijing. The venue covers an area of 2.38 hectares and the total floor space of construction reaches 24,662 square metres. The seating capacity is 8,024 seats, including 3,956 temporary ones. It consists of a main gym and a comprehensive facility. Construction started in October 2005 and was completed in August 2007. The event of Taekwondo competitions at the 2008 Summer Olympics is held in Beijing. It was on the duration of August 20 to August 23 at the Beijing Science and Technology University Gymnasium. The event consists of various athletes, who are 128 Taekwondo practitioners, consisting 64 men and 64 women. These athletes competed in 8 events, where for the first time ever, two bronze medals were awarded per event. Charlotte Rose Craig (born February 2, 1991 in Riverside, California) is a member of the U.S. 2008 Summer Olympic team competing in Taekwondo in the 49 kg (108 lb) division. Biography Craig was born in Riverside, California, to parents Jim Craig and Charlotte Craig Sr. She currently lives in Murrieta, California. When Craig was 2 years old, she had a dysfunctional kidney and had it removed. Her doctors told her parents to have her not participate in hard contact sports. When Craig was 5 years old, her father and mother agreed to sign her up for taekwondo. At first, they had her wear extra padding to protect her only kidney, but soon she started to work without it. Ivett Gonda (born April 28, 1986 in Jászberény, Hungary) is a Hungarian-born Canadian retired taekwondo competitor. She moved to Canada when she was four.
