Table Tennis At The 2016 Summer Olympics – Women's Team
The women's team table tennis event was part of the table tennis programme at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The event took place from Friday 12 August to Tuesday 16 August 2016 at Riocentro. The medals were presented by Timothy Fok, IOC member, Hong Kong and Thomas Weikert, President of the ITTF. Riocentro
Riocentro is an exhibition and convention center located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Built in 1977, it is the largest exhibition center in Latin America. Notable events 1981 May Day attack On April 30, 1981, during a May Day music concert, Riocentro was the target of a terrorist attack by hardliner members of the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964–1985). Sergeant Guilherme Pereira do Rosário and then-Captain Wilson Dias Machado, nowadays a Colonel, were responsible for detonating two bombs at the venue. Around 9 p.m., however, one of the bombs exploded in the lap of Sergeant Rosário, killing him and seriously wounding Machado. A second bomb exploded a few miles away at a powerhouse responsible for providing electrical energy to Riocentro; it was thrown over the fence and exploded on the ground, and the electric power supply was never interrupted that evening. Lee Ho Ching
Lee Ho Ching (born 24 November 1992) is a Hong Kong table tennis player. She qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, and was selected to represent Hong Kong in the women's singles and the women's team. At the 2020 Summer Olympics, she won a bronze medal with Doo Hoi Kem and Minnie Soo Wai Yam in the women’s team event. Early years Lee graduated from St. Rose of Lima's School and studied at Diocesan Girls' School. She dropped out at 15 years old to pursue a full-time athletic career. Doo Hoi Kem
Doo Hoi Kem (; born 27 November 1996) is a Hong Kong table tennis player. She won two medals at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics and she was a member of Hong Kong women's team at the 2014 World Team Championships. In 2015, she won a bronze medal in mixed doubles event with Wong Chun Ting at the World Championships. In 2021, she also won bronze in the women's team event with Lee Ho Ching and Minnie Soo Wai Yam at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Early years Doo studied at Tseung Kwan O Catholic Primary School and Heep Yunn School in her early years. Tie Ya Na or Tie Yana (; born 13 May 1979) is a table tennis player from Hong Kong, China who won two silver medals at the 2006 Asian Games in the singles and doubles competitions. Zhou Yihan
Zhou Yihan (; born 30 January 1994) is a Chinese-born Singaporean table tennis player. Born in China, she moved to Singapore in 2009 via the Foreign Sports Talent Scheme. She was eligible to play in 2011. Zhou won a team gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and a team Bronze at the 2014 Asian Games. Yu Mengyu
Yu Mengyu (; born 18 August 1989) is a retired Chinese-born Singaporean table tennis player. Born in Liaoning, China, Yu left China in 2006 at the age of 17 to join the Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA). She was part of the team that won the 2010 World Team Table Tennis Championships in Moscow, Russia. She represented Singapore in the 2016 and 2020 Summer Olympics (Team & Singles). Yu retired from the national team on 22 March 2022. The Tokyo Olympics was her final international tournament. Early life Yu was born and raised in Liaoning. She started practising table tennis from the age of five and eventually become a provincial player. During an event in Beijing when she was 16, Yu was spotted by STTA coach Chen Yong.
