Table Tennis At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's Team
The women's team table tennis event was part of the Table tennis at the 2008 Summer Olympics, table tennis programme and took place between August 13 and 17 at the Peking University Gymnasium. Teams consisted of three members. The sixteen teams were divided into four groups of four teams each, playing a round-robin within their pool. The top team in each pool advanced to the semifinals, with the second-place team from each group going to the bronze medal playoffs. The two semifinal winners met in the gold medal match, while the two semifinal losers each played against one of the winners from the bronze medal playoffs, with the winners of those games meeting in the bronze medal match. Each match consisted of up to five games, with the first team to win three being declared the winner. Zhenqi Barthel
Zhenqi Barthel (; Sun Zhenqi; born 9 January 1987) is a German table tennis player of Chinese origin. In 2002, she moved to Essen, Germany, where she became a resident athlete of TuS Holsterhausen, and trained for the table tennis team, under her personal coaches Jörg Bitzigeio and Wang Zhi. Three years later, she was adopted by the couple Barthel, changed her surname, and obtained a German citizenship. Elke Schall, born 19 July 1973 in Speyer, is a professional table tennis player from Germany. She has an offensive, looping style. She competed at five consecutive Olympics from 1992 to 2008. Her doubles partner at the first four Olympics was Nicole Struse, with whom she won the European Championships in 1996 and 1998. She was part of the German team that came third in 1997 and sixth in 2004 at the World Championships and three podium finishes at the European Championships in 2000, 2002, and 2007. Sayaka Hirano
is a Japanese five-time national table tennis champion. She competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics, reaching the third round of the singles competition. She also competed in the team competition, reaching the bronze medal final but losing to South Korea. At the 2012 London Olympics Women's Team Event semi-finals, she helped Japan overcome Singapore to reach their historic first final by winning her doubles match with Kasumi Ishikawa over Wang Yuegu and Li Jiawei (11-3, 13-11 and 11–4).
