T.O. McCreadie
Tom McCreadie (1907–1992), better known as T. O. McCreadie was an Australian film director and producer, who was also involved in distribution and exhibition for many years. Biography Tom and his brother Alec worked as exhibitors in Sydney in the 1920s. In 1940 they formed Embassy Pictures and made several shorts. In 1946 they re-recorded the Russian film '' Memory's Harvest'' with English dialogue, the first time this had been attempted in an Australian film. The movie was about a Russian taxi driver who becomes a Bolshoi opera star; among the actors they used for dubbing were Peter Finch and John Fernside. The McCreadies began feature film production in 1948 with ''Always Another Dawn'', which gave early lead roles to Charles Tingwell and Guy Doleman. ''Filmnews'' was a monthly newspaper that covered independent film production, distribution and exhibition in Australia and the federal and state government policies and practices that supported them. Produced in Sydney, it was distributed around Australia, containing news, reviews, interviews, articles and some gossip on the local film community. It ran from February 1975, from government startup grants over 1973–74, to 1995. History ''Filmnews'' first issue appeared in February 1975. Published in St Peters' Lane, Darlinghurst, Filmnews began as a newsletter with screening and meeting information and catalogue of the Sydney Filmmakers Co-op. In August 1975 filmmaker Aggy Read complained that it was "flabby and indulgent with very little meaningful news/info/dialogue", which galvanised the newspaper into transforming into a legitimate newspaper for the filmmaker/worker community. Musical Story (russian: Музыкальная история, Muzykalnaja istorija) is a 1940 Soviet musical comedy film directed by Aleksandr Ivanovsky and Gerbert Rappaport. Plot The film tells about the taxi driver Petya Govorkov, who rehearses Lensky's role in the local opera house. His talents are highly appreciated by the elderly singer and conductor Makedonsky, but because Petya leaves to study at the conservatoire, he quarrels with his girlfriend. Peter Finch
Frederick George Peter Ingle Finch (28 September 191614 January 1977) was an English-Australian actor of theatre, film and radio. Born in London, he emigrated to Australia as a teenager and was raised in Sydney, where he worked in vaudeville and radio before becoming a star of Australian films. Joining the Old Vic Company after World War II, he achieved widespread critical success in Britain for both stage and screen performances. ''Always Another Dawn'' is a 1948 Australian wartime melodrama directed by T.O. McCreadie. It was the first leading role for Bud Tingwell. Synopsis Terry Regan, from Camden, New South Wales, is the son of Molly Regan and a naval officer who died in action in 1916. Terry is called up to serve in the navy during World War II, and turns down a commission in order to see action early. He becomes friends with fellow sailor Warren and serves in the Mediterranean on HMAS ''Dauntless'' for two years. While home on leave he falls in love with his neighbour's daughter, Patricia, and they plan to marry on his next leave. Charles Tingwell
Charles William Tingwell Member of the Order of Australia, AM (3 January 1923 – 15 May 2009), known professionally as Bud Tingwell or Charles 'Bud' Tingwell, was an Australian film, television, theatre and radio actor. One of the veterans of Australian film, he acted in his first motion picture in 1946 and went on to appear in more than 100 films and numerous TV programs in both the United Kingdom and Australia. Guy Doleman
Guy Doleman (22 November 1923 – 30 January 1996) was a New Zealand born actor, active in Australia, Britain and the United States. Early life Doleman was born in Hamilton, Waikato, New Zealand, later moving to Australia. Career During the 1940s and '50s, Doleman was one of the busiest actors in Australia, appearing in the majority of films made there at the time, and being busy on radio, particularly in the drama ''Hagen's Circus'', which made him a radio star in Australia.
