T. R. Mahalingam (actor)
Thenkarai Ramakrishna Mahalingam (16 June 1924 - 21 April 1978) born in Sholavandan Thenkarai was an Indian actor, singer and music composer of the 1940s and 1950s. He was known for his melodious songs mostly based on romantic or devotional themes. Early days Mahalingam's career as an actor and singer began since his childhood. He regularly appeared in stage plays popularly called special dramas. Mahalingam trained as a singer during the time when microphones and amplifiers were rarely present in performance halls. His music training, like those of singers S. G. Kittappa, Krishnan, M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar and to a large extent TMS, stressed voice projection and singing loud so as to be audible in large auditoriums. So it was that in 1933, when the prominent singer Kittappa died at the early age of 28, Mahalingam got his first break in films.. ''Prahalada'' is a 1939 Indian Tamil language film directed by B. N. Rao. It deals with the story of Prahlada and his devotion to Lord Vishnu. It was one of the earliest adaptations this mythologic story after the 1932 Telugu version. The story has subsequently been adapted 20 times in numerous languages including Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali and Assamese with most of them being successful at the box office. ''Dhaasippen,'' also ''Dhaasippenn'' () is a 1943 Tamil-language film directed by Ellis R. Dungan and produced by Bhuvaneswai Pictures. The lead actors are T. R. Mahalingam and M. G. Ramachandran. The film was scored by Lalitha Venkatraman and S. Rajeswara Rao. The film has had three other titles: ''Jyothi Malar'', ''Dasi Penn and Thumbai Mahatmyam'', and ''Jothi Malar'' (). The film is based on a folk tale about a girl becoming a devadasi and dedicating her life to worshipping Lord Shiva and refusing to follow the traditional path of marrying a man. ''Dhaasippen'' performed well and became a box office hit. But no print of the film is known to survive, making it a lost film. Plot A young devadasi (R. Modern Theaters Ltd was an Indian film studio in Salem, Tamil Nadu started by T. R. Sundaram Mudaliar in 1935. The studio produced over more than 150 films until 1982 in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, Sinhalese and even English of which Tamil were the majority. History In the early 1930s, T. R. Sundaram entered the world of Tamil cinema as a partner of a Salem-based film company, Angel Films. He was involved in productions such as ''Draupadi Vastrapaharanam'' (1934), Dhruva (1935) and Nalla Thangal (1935). Then he decided to start his own company, Modern Theatres Limited. He realized that to make film making a business, it had to be organized and managed like a business enterprise.
