Sør-Varanger ( sme, Máttá-Várjjat, fkv, Etelä-Varenki, fi, Etelä-Varanki, russian: Сёр-Вара́нгер/Syor-Varánger) is a municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. The administrative centre of the municipality is the town of Kirkenes. Other settlements in the municipality include the villages of Bjørnevatn, Bugøynes, Elvenes, Grense Jakobselv, Hesseng, Jakobsnes, Neiden, and Sandnes. Located west of the Norway–Russia border, Sør-Varanger is the only Norwegian municipality that shares a land border with Russia, with the only legal border crossing at Storskog. The municipality is the 6th largest by area out of the 356 municipalities in Norway. Sør-Varanger is the 112th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 9,925. Norway–Russia Border
The border between Norway and Russia ( no, Russergrensen / Russergrensa, russian: Российско-норвежская граница, ''Rossiysko-Norvezhskaya Granitsa'') consists of a land border between Sør-Varanger, Norway, and Pechengsky District, Russia, and a marine border in the Varangerfjord. It further consists of a border between the two countries' exclusive economic zones (EEZ) in the Barents Sea and the Arctic Ocean. Grense Jakobselv
( Skolt Sami: Vue'rjemjokk sme, Vuorjánjohka fi, Vuoremijoki and russian: Гренсе Якобсэльв) is a small village in Sør-Varanger Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. It is located on the shore of the Barents Sea at the mouth of the Jakobselva river. It lies about by road east of the town of Kirkenes. The area was settled by Norwegians in 1851. Bugøynes
( fi, Pykeijä) is a fishing village in Sør-Varanger Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county in northeastern Norway. The village is situated along the Varangerfjorden which is a vast bay off the Barents Sea (a part of the Arctic Ocean), near the border with Russia. The village is situated some north of the Arctic Circle, with nearly 230 inhabitants. The village is populated by many Finnish-speaking residents, leading to the village being referred to as or "Little Finland". The name The name Bugøynes means "bay island headland", from ''bug'' (bay, inlet) + ''øy'' (island) + ''nes'' (headland). Holmengrå, Finnmark
Holmengrå is the name a small fishing village in Sør-Varanger Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. The village lies on a small area of flat land along the Holmengråfjorden (an arm off the Varangerfjorden). The tall mountain Holmengråfjellet lies just west of the village. The area is rocky with poor boat access. There is some grass and heather around the village, but the ground is mostly rocks. History The village was established in 1880 by Kven immigrants from Finland. It was populated until 1970. It was protected by the Cultural Heritage Act in 1998. Storskog
Storskog is a border crossing station on the Norwegian side of the Norway-Russia border, along the European route E105 highway. The crossing is located in Sør-Varanger Municipality in Finnmark county on the Norway side of the border. The Russian side is in Boris Gleb in Pechengsky District in Murmansk Oblast. There is a border crossing station on the Russian side also, and both have to be passed to enter the opposite country. There is a duty-free shop in Russia between the stations. Storskog is the only legal land border crossing between Norway and Russia. Elvenes is a village in Sør-Varanger Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. It is located at the mouth of the river Pasvikelva where it flows into the Bøkfjorden, a southern branch of the Varangerfjorden.
