Sør-Aukra
Sør-Aukra is a former municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. Sør Aukra Municipality existed from 1924 until 1965 when it was merged into Midsund Municipality (now part of Molde Municipality). The municipality consisted of the entire island of Otrøya, the eastern part of Midøya island, and some small surrounding islands at the entrance to the large Romsdal Fjord. The village of Midsund was the administrative centre of the municipality. History The municipality of Sør-Aukra was established on 1 January 1924 when the old Aukra Municipality was divided into Sør-Aukra (in the south) and Nord-Aukra (in the north). Initially, Sør-Aukra Municipality had a population of 1,395. During the 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of the Schei Committee. Midsund Municipality
Midsund is a former municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. It was part of the Romsdal region. The administrative centre was the village of Midsund on Otrøya island. Other settlements on the island included Uglvik and Raknes in the north and Nord-Heggdal in the southeast. The municipality consisted of many islands. The main islands were Otrøya, Midøya, and Dryna, as well as the smaller populated islands of Magerøya and Tautra—both are less than . There were also many tiny uninhabited islands and skerries. Midøya
Midøya (sometimes called ''Mia'') is an island in Molde Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The island sits at the entrance to the Romsdalsfjorden between the islands of Dryna and Otrøya. Until 1965, the island was divided between the municipalities of Sør-Aukra and Vatne. The Midsund Bridge connects this island to the village of Midsund on the neighboring island of Otrøya. Name The Old Norse form of the name was ''Miðja''. The name is identical with the word ''miðja'' which means "in the middle". List Of Former Municipalities Of Norway
This is a list of former municipalities of Norway, i.e. municipalities that no longer exist. When the local council system was introduced in Norway in 1837-38, the country had 392 municipalities. In 1958 the number had grown to a total of 744 rural municipalities, 64 city municipalities as well as a small number of small seaports with '' ladested'' status. A committee led by Nikolai Schei, formed in 1946 to examine the situation, proposed hundreds of mergers to reduce the number of municipalities and improve the quality of local administration. Most of the mergers were carried out, albeit to significant popular protest. As of January 2006 there are 431 municipalities in Norway, and there are plans for further mergers and political pressure to do so. Vatne Municipality
Vatne is a former municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1902 until its dissolution in 1965. The municipality included land and islands surrounding the Midfjorden and Vatnefjorden in what is now part of Ålesund Municipality and Molde Municipality. The administrative centre was the village of Vatne where Vatne Church is located. History On 1 January 1902, the northern part of Skodje Municipality was split off to form the new Vatne Municipality. Vatne had an initial population of 1,547. During the 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of the Schei Committee. Romsdal
Romsdal is a traditional district in the Norwegian county Møre og Romsdal, located between Nordmøre and Sunnmøre. The district of Romsdal comprises Aukra, Fræna, Midsund, Molde, Nesset, Rauma, Sandøy, and Vestnes. It is named after the valley of Romsdalen, which covers part of Rauma.
