The Syriac Catholic Patriarchal Exarchate of Turkey (informally Turkey of the Syriacs) is the presence of the Syriac Catholic Church in Turkey. It is part of the Syriac Catholic Church, an Eastern Catholic particular church that conducts its liturgy in the Syriac language and uses the West Syrian Rite. It is under the jurisdiction of the Syriac Catholic Patriarch of Antioch. History It was established in 1991 as Patriarchal Exarchate of Turkey on territory that previously had no proper ordinary for the particular church, which previously administered it as a patriarchal vicariate, whose first vicar was promoted to be the first exarch. In 2018, the Syriac Catholic community in Istanbul was leased Sacre Coeur Church, in the Beşiktaş district of the city, by the government to use free of charge for the following 49 years. The Catholic Church in Turkey is part of the worldwide Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope and the canonical leadership of the curia in Rome that is submitted to the Pope. Demographics In the 2000s, there are around 35,000 Catholics, constituting 0.05% of the population. The faithful follow the Latin, Byzantine, Armenian and Chaldean Rites. Most Latin Church Catholics are Levantines of mainly Italian or French background, with a few are ethnic Turks, who are usually either converts via marriage to Levantines or other non-Turkish Catholics, or are returnees from Europe who converted there, and who may often be still registered as Muslim by the government. Yusuf Sağ (born 1934 in İdil, Şırnak, Turkey) is the Syriac Catholic chorbishop, who served as the Patriarchal Exarch of the Syriac Catholic Patriarchal Exarchate of Turkey since 1991 until his retirement on 2 July 2017. Life After primary studies, Yusuf Sağ studied philosophy and theology in Beirut and received his ordination to the priesthood on 14 February 1964. He was pastor from 1964 to 1970 in Mardin and Diyarbakir, a NATO base. In 1985 he was appointed patriarchal vicar and in 1987 he was appointed chorbishop, a priest with episcopal dignity. West Syriac Rite
The West Syriac Rite, also called Syro-Antiochian Rite, is an Eastern Christian liturgical rite that employs the Divine Liturgy of Saint James in the West Syriac dialect. It is practised in the Maronite Church, the Syriac Orthodox Church, the Syriac Catholic Church and various Malankara Churches of India (see the section on usage below). It is one of two main liturgical rites of Syriac Christianity, the other being the East Syriac Rite. It originated in the ancient Patriarchate of Antioch. It has more anaphoras than any other rite. Many new texts translated from Greek were accepted among the Syriac Orthodox of Antioch. Those associated with Tagrit did not accept them.
