Synchronized Swimming At The 1992 Summer Olympics
At the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, two events in synchronized swimming were contested, both for women only. Two gold medals were awarded in solo synchronized swimming after a judge inadvertently entered the score of "8.7" instead of the intended "9.7" in the computerized scoring system for one of Sylvie Fréchette's figures. This error ultimately placed Fréchette second, leaving Kristen Babb-Sprague for the gold medal. Following an appeal FINA awarded Fréchette a gold medal, replacing her silver medal and leaving the two swimmers both with gold. This was the last time that solo synchronized swimming was included in the Olympic program before being replaced in favor of a team event. Piscines Bernat Picornell ( en, Bernat Picornell Pools) is a swimming venue situated in the Olympic Ring in Montjuïc, Barcelona. The venue consists of three swimming pools: a 50m indoor pool, a 50m outdoor pool, and a pool for diving. It hosted the swimming events, synchronized swimming events, the water polo final, and the swimming part of the modern pentathlon event for the 1992 Summer Olympics. The swimming pools are for public use and are open all year long. History The venue, named after the Catalan swimmer and founder of the Spanish Swimming Federation Bernat Picornell i Richier, was built to host the 1970 European Aquatics Championships. Karen Josephson
Karen Julia Josephson (born January 10, 1964) is an American Olympic champion and former competitor in synchronized swimming. Karen Josephson partnered with her twin sister Sarah Josephson to win a silver medal in the women's duet at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul and then a gold medal in the same event with at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. She won silver medals in the duet and team events at the 1986 World Championships in Madrid. At the 1991 World Championships in Perth she won gold medals in same events. Josephson also competed at the 1987 Pan American Game in Indianapolis, winning gold medals in duet and team events. Artistic swimming (known as synchronised swimming until 2017) has been an event at the Summer Olympics since the 1984 Games. The current Olympic program has competition in ''duet'' and ''team'' events, but in past games there was also a ''solo'' event. The United States, Canada and Japan have traditionally been the strongest nations in the sport, winning the Olympic medals from 1984 through 1996, but Russia has recently dominated, winning every event between 2000 and 2020. Vicky Vilagos (born April 17, 1963) is a Canadian competitor in synchronised swimming and an Olympic medalist. Career Vilagos and her twin sister Penny Vilagos began synchronized swimming at age eight. They won their first Canadian National Championship in duet at age seventeen, they would go on to win five more national titles. Vicky Vilagos and Penny Vilagos won a silver medal in the women's duet at the 1983 Pan American Games. They retired from synchronized swimming in 1985 after failing to make the 1984 Olympic team.
