Symphony No. 3 (Saint-Saëns)
The Symphony No. 3 in C minor, Opus number, Op. 78, was completed by Camille Saint-Saëns in 1886 at the peak of his artistic career. It is popularly known as the ''Organ Symphony'', since, unusually for a late-Romantic symphony, two of the four sections use the pipe organ. The composer inscribed it as: ''Symphonie No. 3 "avec orgue"'' (with organ). The symphony was commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society (then called simply the Philharmonic Society) in England, and the first performance was given in London on 19 May 1886, at St James's Hall, conducted by the composer. After the death of his friend and mentor Franz Liszt on 31 July 1886, Saint-Saëns dedicated the work to Liszt's memory. Symphony In D Minor (Franck)
The Symphony in D minor is the best-known orchestral work and the only mature symphony written by the 19th-century composer César Franck. It employs a Cyclic form, cyclic form, with important themes recurring in all three movements. After two years of work, Franck completed the symphony on August 22, 1888. It was premiered at the Conservatoire de Paris, Paris Conservatory on 17 February 1889 under the direction of Jules Garcin. Franck dedicated it to his pupil Henri Duparc (composer), Henri Duparc. Despite mixed reviews at the time, it has subsequently entered the international orchestral repertoire. Although today programmed less frequently in concerts than in the first half of the 20th century, it has been recorded numerous times (more than 70 recordings are available). Jules Pasdeloup
Jules Étienne Pasdeloup (15 September 1819 – 13 August 1887) was a French conductor. Life Pasdeloup was born in Paris. His father was an assistant conductor at the Opéra Comique; he was educated in music at the Conservatoire de Paris, leaving with a first prize in piano. He founded in 1851 a ''Société des jeunes artistes du conservatoire'' that gave concerts in the Salle Hertz for a decade, and, as conductor of its concerts, did much to popularize the best new compositions of the time. A symphonic poem or tone poem is a piece of orchestral music, usually in a single continuous movement, which illustrates or evokes the content of a poem, short story, novel, painting, landscape, or other (non-musical) source. The German term ''Tondichtung (tone poem)'' appears to have been first used by the composer Carl Loewe in 1828. The Hungarian composer Franz Liszt first applied the term ''Symphonische Dichtung'' to his 13 works in this vein. Francesco Berger
Francesco Berger (10 June 1834 – 26 April 1933) was a pianist and composer. He was a teacher of the piano and a professor at the Royal Academy of Music but is mostly remembered as the honorary secretary of the Philharmonic Society for 27 years. Life and career Berger was born in London on 10 June 1834 of Italian parents but had British nationality as his father was a naturalized Briton. In 1848 travelled to Trieste from where his father had originated. He wrote an opera (''Il lazzarone, ossia La fortuna vien dormendo'') which was performed there when he was seventeen. Jules Émile Frédéric Massenet (; 12 May 1842 – 13 August 1912) was a French composer of the Romantic era best known for his operas, of which he wrote more than thirty.
