Sylvio Frota
Sylvio Couto Coelho da Frota (August 26, 1910 - October 23, 1996) was a Brazilian army general and minister of the Army during the Ernesto Geisel government. Biography Sylvio Frota studied at Colégio Pedro II. In 1928 he entered the Military School of Realengo. He married Ídia Pragana da Frota. Frota had two children, one of them being Navy officer Luís Pragana da Frota. He is great-uncle of Alexandre Frota. On December 20, 1977, Frota was awarded the Grand Cross of the Military Order of Avis of Portugal. Frota was Roman Catholic. Military career In August 1934 he was promoted to first lieutenant. In June 1948 Frota was promoted to major. And in September 1952 the lieutenant colonel. In 1955 Frota went against Marshal Lott's November 11 movement. In April 1960 Frota was promoted to colonel. The military dictatorship in Brazil ( pt, ditadura militar) was established on 1 April 1964, after a coup d'état by the Brazilian Armed Forces, with support from the United States government, against President João Goulart. The Brazilian dictatorship lasted for 21 years, until 15 March 1985. The military coup was fomented by José de Magalhães Pinto, Adhemar de Barros, and Carlos Lacerda (who had already participated in the conspiracy to depose Getúlio Vargas in 1945), then governors of the states of Minas Gerais, São Paulo, and Guanabara, respectively. The coup was planned and executed by the most forefront commanders of the Brazilian Army and received the support of almost all high-ranking members of the military, along with conservative elements in society, like the Catholic Church and anti-communist civil movements among the Brazilian middle and upper classes. Augusto Hamann Rademaker Grünewald (11 May 1905 – 13 September 1985) was a Brazilian admiral, of German and Danish descent, in the Brazilian Navy. Rademaker was one of the leaders of the Military Junta (30 August 1969 – 30 October 1969) that ruled Brazil between the illness of Artur da Costa e Silva in August 1969 and the investiture ceremony of Emílio Garrastazu Médici in October of that same year, elected by fellow officer generals and confirmed by the Congress. In the same occasions Rademaker was picked and "elected" as vice president for the same term as Medici's (1969–1974). During his tenure as vice president he was awarded one of Portugal's highest honors, the Grand-Cross of the Order of the Tower and Sword on 26 July 1972. Golbery do Couto e Silva (August 21, 1911 – September 18, 1987) was a Brazilian general and politician. Biography Golbery do Couto e Silva was born in Rio Grande, a city in the Southern State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. At the age of 16, he joined the Military School of Realengo, Rio de Janeiro, which bred officials for the country's Army. On November 22, 1930, he graduated first among all classes becoming an Aspirant Officer. His Combat Arms Branch was Infantry, and by 1932 he was among the 9th Infantry Regiment quenching the 1932 Revolution in São Paulo. As a lieutenant, he also served in the 6th Infantry Regiment. In May 1937 he was promoted to captain and began to serve on the National Security Council. Later he was sent to Curitiba in the state of Parana. Luís Alves de Lima e Silva, Duke of Caxias (25 August 1803 – 7 May 1880), nicknamed "the Peacemaker" and "Iron Duke", was an army officer, politician and monarchist of the Empire of Brazil. Like his father and uncles, Caxias pursued a military career. In 1823 he fought as a young officer in the Brazilian War for Independence against Portugal, then spent three years in Brazil's southernmost province, Cisplatina, as the government unsuccessfully resisted that province's secession in the Cisplatine War. Though his own father and uncles renounced Emperor Dom Pedro I during the protests of 1831, Caxias remained loyal.
