Sylhet-2 is a constituency represented in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) of Bangladesh since 2019 by Mokabbir Khan of the Gano Forum. Boundaries The constituency encompasses Bishwanath and Osmani Nagar upazilas. History The constituency was created for the first general elections in newly independent Bangladesh, held in 1973. Ahead of the 2008 general election, the Election Commission redrew constituency boundaries to reflect population changes revealed by the 2001 Bangladesh census. The 2008 redistricting altered the boundaries of the constituency. Ahead of the 2018 general election, the Election Commission altered the boundaries of the constituency. Shafiqur Rahaman Chowdhury
Shafiqur Rahaman Chowdhury ( bn, শফিকুর রহমান চৌধুরী) is a Bangladesh Awami League politician and the former Member of Parliament of Sylhet-2. Early life and education Chowdhury was born into a Bengali Muslim family in the village of Chandbharang in Dashghar Union, Bishwanath, Sylhet District, East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). He was a descendant of Shah Chand, whom the village is named after, who was the son of Shaykh Kalu, a disciple of Shah Jalal who participated in the Muslim conquest of Sylhet in 1303. His father was Abdul Matlib Chowdhury, a notable community leader abroad, and his mother was Latifun Nisa Chowdhury. Chowdhury received his Secondary School Certificate from Chandbharang High School in 1972. He moved on to study at the Murari Chand College in Sylhet where he got his Higher Secondary School Certificate in 1975 and Bachelor of Arts in 1979. Ilias Ali (Bangladeshi Politician)
M Ilias Ali (1 January 1961 – disappeared 17 April 2012) was a Bangladeshi politician and member of the Jatiya Sangsad (2001–2006) representing the Sylhet-2 constituency. He served as the organising secretary of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. He, along with his personal car driver, Ansar Ali, went missing on 18 April 2012. Later that day, local police recovered his abandoned car near his residence in Banani neighborhood and found Ansar's cellphone inside. They have not been seen since. On the tenth anniversary of his disappearance, Netra News, an independent news platform in Sweden, reported on 21 April 2022, that Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), an elite Bangladeshi police unit, had carried out the disappearance. Bishwanath Upazila
Bishwanath ( bn, বিশ্বনাথ) is an upazila of Sylhet District in the Division of Sylhet, Bangladesh. History One of the palaces of Gour Govinda, the last Hindu ruler of Sylhet, was situated in present-day Bishwanath. Its ruins are still intact and is locally referred to as 'Jahazer Manzil' and next to Govinda's personal pond, the 'Satpari Dighi'. During the Muslim conquest of Sylhet in 1303, Govinda abandoned Sylhet and fled to the Kamrup region. Shah Jalal, a leader of the conquest, was known to have dispatched his disciples across the region to propagate Islamic teachings. 2018 Bangladeshi General Election
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 30 December 2018 to elect 300 directly-elected members of the Jatiya Sangsad. The result was a landslide victory for the Awami League led by Sheikh Hasina. According to political scientist Ali Riaz, the elections were not free and fair. The BBC News reported that they were marred by violence and allegations of vote rigging. Opposition leader Kamal Hossain rejected the results, calling it "farcical" and demanding fresh elections to be held under a neutral government. Balaganj Upazila
Balaganj ( bn, বালাগঞ্জ) is an upazila of Sylhet District in Sylhet Division, Bangladesh. Etymology The name Balaganj is derived from the Bengali language, Bengali word ''bala'' meaning 'strength' and the Persian/Bengali word ''ganj'' that means 'marketplace' or 'neighbourhood'. Its older name was Kushiyarakul named after the abundance of sugar-cane (''kushiyar'' in Sylheti) in the area. The town also lies on the banks of the Kushiyara River, which also takes its name from sugarcane. An ashram was opened in its central bazaar known as the Madan Mohan Jiu Ashram, which renamed the area to Madanganj. The female worshippers at the temple were known for wearing many bangles on both of their hands.
