Syed Mohamed Bin Ahmad Alsagoff (Soldier)
Syed Mohamed bin Ahmad Alsagoff ( ar, سيد محمد بن سيد أحمد السقاف ') was an Hadhrami Muslim born in Singapore and grandson of Nong Chik. Early life and education He was educated at Victoria School and later joined the Malayan Armed Forces, the predecessor of the Malaysian Armed Forces. He rose to the rank of major-general before his retirement in the 1970s. His father was Dato Syed Ahmad bin Mohammad Alsagoff (A.M. Alsagoff), a renowned philanthropist who also brought the Boy Scout movement and St. John's Ambulance brigade to Singapore and was a son of Nong Chik. When Singapore was part of Malaysia from 1963 to 1965, he was the commander of the Malaysian armed forces based in Singapore, holding the rank of brigadier. Hadhrami People
The Hadhrami ( ar, حضرمي, ḥaḍramī, singular) or Hadharem ( ar, حضارم, ḥaḍāram, plural) are an Arab ethnic group indigenous to the Hadhramaut region in South Arabia around Eastern Yemen, western Oman, and southern Saudi Arabia and their descendants in diaspora communities around the world. They speak Hadhrami Arabic, an Arabic dialect with heavy influence from the extinct South Semitic Hadramautic language. Syed Jaafar Albar ( ar, سيد جعفر بن حسن البار '; born August 21, 1914 –14 January 1977) was a Malaysian politician. His staunch defence of his political party, the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) – which leads the governing Barisan Nasional coalition – led to him being given the moniker "Lion of UMNO". He was also known for his radical views on Malay sovereignty over Malaysia, and Malay supremacy in politics, and is of Hadhrami Arab descent. Alsagoff Family
The family of Al-Saggoff ( ar, ٱلسَّقَّاف, as-Saqqāf; transliterated elsewhere ''al-Saqqaf'', ''al-Saggaf'' or ''al-Saqqāf'') were Arab Singaporean spice traders of Hadhrami origin, who became influential by marrying into a royal family from the Celebes (now Sulawesi, Indonesia). They acquired many properties, like the other Arab families, including the "Perseverance Estate" where they grew lemon grass. The estate is now considered to be the heart of the Muslim community in Singapore, with the Alsagoff family still retaining its prominence there. They originally belong to the Ba'Alawi clan of the Bani Hashim in Hadhramaut. Hence, they are a Ba'Alawi Sayyid family. The majority of the Arabs in Singapore are Hadhramis tracing their ancestry from the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula called Hadhramaut, Yemen. Some of the people living there are known as “Hadhramis”. The land there is mostly desert region. The fertile areas, suitable for cultivation, are small and concentrated in the wadi region. This harsh natural environment drove the Hadhramis to travel out of the area to trade and acquire the necessary items they needed.
