Sydney University Labor Club
The Sydney University Labor Club is the oldest political society in Australia. It is one of the most influential Australian university political societies. Many of the club's alumni have gone on to prominent political careers. The club is associated with the left of the Australian Labor Party. History In early 1925, a Labor group began orienting around University of Sydney Union debate nights. It was in April, though, that the club was officially formed, with a visit to Sydney University by a son of Ramsay MacDonald; the club usurped an official Union dinner to host the visiting party first. H.V. Evatt was the inaugural president of the club, which soon ceased to function after a 1927 split within the New South Wales Labor Party between Jack Lang and Peter Loughlin. Jim Percy
Jim Percy (1948 – 12 October 1992 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia), was a founder of the ''Socialist Workers League'' of Australia, later called the ''Socialist Workers Party'' and the ''Democratic Socialist Party'', and served as national secretary for almost twenty years. Career Percy first became active in politics as a high-school student in 1965, helping organize demonstrations against the Vietnam War. In 1967 he helped to found the Socialist youth organisation ''Resistance'', based on members of the Sydney University Socialist Club and the Vietnam Action Campaign. In 1969, Percy was elected to the initial five-member secretariat of the ''Vietnam Moratorium Campaign'' in Sydney. In 1972, he became a founder of the Socialist Workers League. Dick Klugman
Richard Emanuel Klugman (18 January 1924 – 21 February 2011) was an Australian doctor, activist and politician. He was a member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and served in the House of Representatives from 1969 to 1990, representing the New South Wales seat of Prospect. Early life Klugman was born in Vienna on 18 January 1924, the son of Ella and Bernard Klugman. His father was a Jewish businessman and the family left the country in 1938 to escape antisemitism. He attended Hurlstone Agricultural High School and the University of Sydney, where he studied science and medicine. He worked part-time as a builder's labourer and clerk while at university. He was the president of the Sydney University Labor Club and the Australian Student Labor Federation. Jeff Shaw (politician)
Jeffrey William Shaw, QC (10 October 194911 May 2010) was an Australian lawyer, judge and former Attorney General of New South Wales. Early life and education Shaw was educated at Boronia Park and Chatswood public schools, and Hunters Hill High School where he was a Sergeant in the school Cadet Corps. He graduated in Arts and Law at the University of Sydney in 1973, and also spent a period studying at Templeton College, Oxford. He married Elizabeth Bryant on 21 December 1974 and they had two sons. Legal career Shaw was admitted as a solicitor of the New South Wales Supreme Court in 1975 and as a barrister of that same court the following year. Daryl Melham
Daryl Melham (born 26 November 1954) is a former Australian politician. He was a Labor member of the Australian House of Representatives representing the Division of Banks in New South Wales from March 1990 until September 2013. Early life and education Melham was born in Sydney, to a family of Lebanese descent and studied law and economics at the University of Sydney, earning an LL.B. and a B.Ec. Andrew Leigh
Andrew Keith Leigh (born 3 August 1972) is an Australian politician, author, lawyer and former professor of economics at the Australian National University. He currently serves as the Assistant Minister for Competition, Charities and Treasury. He briefly served as the Parliamentary Secretary to Prime Minister Julia Gillard in 2013 and then served as Shadow Assistant Treasurer from 2013 to 2019. James Spigelman
James Jacob Spigelman (born 1 January 1946) is a former Australian judge who served as Chief Justice of New South Wales from 1998 to 2011. He was also Lieutenant-Governor of New South Wales from 1998 to 2012. He served on the Court of Final Appeal of Hong Kong as a non-permanent judge from other common law jurisdictions from April 2013 to his early resignation in September 2020. Jennifer Ryll McAllister (born 21 February 1973) is an Australian politician. She has been a Senator for New South Wales since 2015 and previously served as the party's national president from 2011 to 2015. She is from the Socialist Left faction of the Labor Party. Verity Helen Firth (born 28 August 1973) is the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Social Justice and Inclusion) at the University of Technology Sydney. She was the chief executive officer of the Public Education Foundation in Australia and is a former politician. Edward Gough Whitlam (11 July 191621 October 2014) was the 21st prime minister of Australia, serving from 1972 to 1975.
