Sydney Arthur Fisher
Sydney Arthur Fisher, (June 12, 1850 – April 9, 1921) was a Canadian politician. Born in Montreal, Canada East, he was educated at the High School of Montreal, McGill University, and finally Trinity College, Cambridge. A farmer, he first ran for the House of Commons of Canada in an 1880 by-election for the riding of Brome. Although defeated, he was elected in 1882 and 1887. A Liberal, he lost to the Conservative candidate Eugène Alphonse Dyer by 3 votes in the 1891 election. He was elected again in the 1896 election and was re-elected in 1900, 1904, and 1908. He was defeated in 1911 and in a 1913 by-election. From 1896 to 1911, he was the Minister of Agriculture. Brome (electoral District)
Brome was a federal electoral district in the province of Quebec, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1925. It was created by the ''British North America Act'', 1867, and was amalgamated into the Brome—Missisquoi electoral district in 1924. The County of Brome consisted of the Townships of Bolton, Potton, Sutton, Brome and the eastern part of the Township of Farnham. James Morris (Quebec Politician)
James Morris (December 16, 1857 – June 12, 1931) was a farmer, marble and granite dealer and political figure in Quebec. He represented Châteauguay in the House of Commons of Canada from 1913 to 1917 as a Conservative. He was born in Rutland, Canada West, the son of Patrick Morris and Ann McRae, and was educated at Saint-Chrysostome, Quebec. Foster settled at Aubrey, Quebec. He was mayor of Saint-Chrysostome for two years. He was defeated by James Pollock Brown when he ran for a federal seat in 1911; Morris was elected to the House of Commons in a 1913 by-election held after Brown's death. Philip Sydney Fisher, (March 31, 1896 – December 17, 1983) was a Canadian businessman. He was president of the Southam Company Ltd. (later Southam Inc.) from 1945 to 1961 and chairman from 1961. In archival science, a fonds is a group of documents that share the same origin and that have occurred naturally as an outgrowth of the daily workings of an agency, individual, or organization. An example of a fonds could be the writings of a poet that were never published or the records of an institution during a specific period. Fonds are a part of a hierarchical level of description system in an archive that begins with fonds at the top, and the subsequent levels become more descriptive and narrower as one goes down the hierarchy. The level of description goes from fonds to series to file and then an item level. However, between the fonds and series level there is sometimes a sub-fonds or sous-fonds level and between the series to file level there is sometimes a sub-series level that helps narrow down the hierarchy. 1911 Canadian Federal Election
The 1911 Canadian federal election was held on September 21, 1911 to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 12th Parliament of Canada. The central issue was Liberal support for a proposed agreement with the United States to lower tariffs. The Conservative Party denounced it because it threatened to weaken ties with Britain, submerge the Canadian economy and Canadian identity with the US, and lead to American annexation of Canada. The idea of a Canadian Navy was also an issue. The Conservatives won, and Robert Borden became the eighth prime minister. The 1908 Canadian federal election was held on Monday October 26, 1908 to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 11th Parliament of Canada. Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier's Liberal Party of Canada was re-elected for a fourth consecutive term in government with a majority government. The Liberals lost four seats and a small share of the popular vote. Sir Robert Borden's Conservatives and Liberal-Conservatives won ten additional seats. This was the first election in which Alberta and Saskatchewan voted as provinces. Following their creation in 1905, the two new provinces continued to be represented by MP's initially elected under the old Northwest Territories riding boundaries, some of which straddled the new provincial border. The 1904 Canadian federal election was held on November 3, 1904 to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 10th Parliament of Canada. Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier led the Liberal Party of Canada to a third term in government, with an increased majority, and over half of the popular vote. Sir Robert Borden's Conservatives and Liberal-Conservatives were unable to challenge the Liberals effectively, and lost a small portion of their popular vote, along with four seats, including his own. Borden re-entered parliament the next year in a by-election. This was the last election until 1949 in which parts of the Northwest Territories were granted representation. Most of the settled regions of the NWT entered Confederation as the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan on 1 September 1905, although its MP's continued to sit as representatives of the old ridings until the 10th Parliament's dissolution.
