Sydmonton
Sydmonton is a small village and estate in the Basingstoke and Deane district of Hampshire, England. Its nearest town is Newbury, which lies approximately north-west from the village. Governance The village is now part of the civil parish of Ecchinswell, Sydmonton and Bishops Green, historically having been within the parish of Kingsclere. It is part of the Burghclere, Highclere and St Mary Bourne ward of Basingstoke and Deane borough council. The borough council is a Non-metropolitan district of Hampshire County Council. Ecchinswell, Sydmonton And Bishops Green
Ecchinswell, Sydmonton and Bishops Green (occasionally referred to as just ''Ecchinswell and Sydmonton'') is a civil parish within the district of Basingstoke and Deane in Hampshire, United Kingdom. Sydmonton is the home of Sydmonton Court, estate of the Kingsmill Family, including Admiral Sir Robert Kingsmill. The estate is currently owned by Andrew Lloyd Webber and is home to the annual Sydmonton Festival. Geography Watership Down, location of the famous Richard Adams novel of the same name, is just South of Ecchinswell. Ladle Hill on Great Litchfield Down, also lies to the south. Part of the hill is a biological SSSI, first notified in 1978. The hill has a partially completed Iron Age hill fort on its summit, and the surrounding area is rich in Iron Age tumuli, enclosures, lynchets and field systems. Sir Robert Kingsmill, 1st Baronet
Sir Robert Brice Kingsmill, 1st Baronet (1730 – 23 November 1805) was an officer of the Royal Navy who served during the Seven Years' War, the American War of Independence and the French Revolutionary Wars, French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars in a career that spanned nearly 60 years. Kingsmill was a contemporary and close friend of Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, Lord Nelson, and was one of the prominent Royal Navy admirals of his time referred to as "The Conquerors of the Seas," illustrated in Piercy Roberts' 1800 engraving. He served with George Brydges Rodney, 1st Baron Rodney, Rodney in the West Indies, where he was wounded in battle, and with Augustus Keppel, 1st Viscount Keppel, Keppel at the Battle of Ushant (1778), Battle of Ushant. Sydmonton Court
Sydmonton Court is an English country house in Hampshire. Built and developed over the centuries, it is surrounded by a 5,000 acre estate, in the parish of Ecchinswell, Sydmonton and Bishops Green, near Watership Down. The house has been listed Grade II* on the National Heritage List for England since 1984, and St Mary's church within the estate is also Grade II* listed. It is owned by the theatrical impresario Andrew Lloyd Webber and his wife, equestrian entrepreneur Madeleine Gurdon. The eclectic nature of its architecture led the house to be described by Pevsner as "the sort of English Architectural mongrel you want to rescue and love for the rest of your life". Kingsclere is a large village and civil parish in Hampshire, England. Geography Kingsclere is approximately equidistant ) from the towns of Basingstoke and Newbury on the A339 road. History Kingsclere can trace back its history to a place identified as belonging to King Alfred in his will between 872 and 888, the 'clere' possibly meaning 'bright' or 'clearing'. Kingsclere formed part of the ancient demesne of the Crown. In his will King Alfred left Kingsclere for life to his second daughter, Ethelgiva, Abbess of Shaftesbury, and there are other mentions of it in Saxon charters. In 931 King Athelstan at a Witenagemot at Colchester granted 10 hides of land at Clere to Abbot Aelfric, and in 943 King Edmund bestowed 15 hides of land at Clere on the 'religious woman Aelfswith'. The Sydmonton Festival is a summer arts festival presented in a deconsecrated 16th century chapel on the grounds of Sydmonton Court, the country estate of Andrew Lloyd Webber. It is in Hampshire, located approximately 85 kilometres southwest of London, and was established in September 1975. Anne Finch, Countess of Winchilsea (''née'' Kingsmill; April 16615 August 1720), was an English poet and courtier. Finch's works often express a desire for respect as a female poet, lamenting her difficult position as a woman in the literary establishment and the court, while writing of "political ideology, religious orientation, and aesthetic sensibility". Her works also allude to other female authors of the time, such as Aphra Behn and Katherine Phillips. Through her commentary on the mental and spiritual equality of the genders and the importance of women fulfilling their potential as a moral duty to themselves and to society, she is regarded as one of the integral female poets of the Restoration Era. Heneage Finch, 5th Earl of Winchilsea FSA (1657 – 30 September 1726) was an English peer, styled Hon. Heneage Finch until 1712. He was the son of Heneage Finch, 3rd Earl of Winchilsea and Mary Seymour. He was born on 3 January 1657 and baptised on 11 January in the same year. The Finch family were traditional royalists. At the Restoration, King Charles II recommended Winchelsea to be ambassador to the Porte. He arrived at Constantinople on 17 January 1661. He was eventually recalled by letter on 19 December 1667. Gilbert Jackson
Gilbert Jackson (c.1595/1600 – after 1648) was an English portrait painter active ca. 1621–1640s. Never associated with the court, Jackson primarily painted portraits of provincial gentry and members of the professions. His work period is bracketed by the signed 1621 portrait of Edward Somerset, 4th Earl of Worcester and the 1643 signed and dated portrait of Chief Justice Sir John Bankes (1643), at Kingston Lacy in Dorset. Little is known of Jackson's personal life. He likely trained in London under one of the masters of the Jacobean era, and after a career spanning twenty years, was made free of the Painter-Stainers' Company on 16 December 1640.
