Swissair Asia
Swissair Asia AG was a subsidiary of Swissair founded due to the legal status of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and territory disputes with the People's Republic of China in order to allow Swissair to continue flying to Taiwan from Switzerland. History Swissair Asia was formed to serve Taipei, Taiwan, within the Republic of China, while Swissair was maintaining service to the People's Republic of China. It began operating a twice-weekly service between Zürich and Taipei via Bangkok on 7 April 1995. The airline ceased operating when their parent company Swissair went bankrupt in 2001. Livery The aircraft used by Swissair Asia had the Chinese character "" (, which means from the Chinese character for "propitious" or "lucky" and translation of Switzerland, "" (), on the tail fin instead of the cross. Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport is an international airport serving Taipei and northern Taiwan. Located about west of Taipei in Dayuan District, Taoyuan, the airport is Taiwan's largest. It was also the busiest airport in Taiwan before the COVID-19 pandemic which began in 2020. It is operated by the Taoyuan International Airport Corporation. In 2016, it was ranked the best airport for its size in the Asia-Pacific region by Airports Council International. The airport opened for commercial operations in 1979 as Chiang Kai-shek International Airport and was renamed in 2006. Air France Asie was a subsidiary of Air France founded due to the legal status of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and territory disputes with the People's Republic of China in order to allow Air France to continue flying to both countries. It became the main carrier operating from France to Taipei after Air Charter (another company operated by Air France) stopped flying in 1998. History Main period (1994–2004) Owing to the disputed status of Taiwan (also known as the Republic of China), Air France could not operate flights to the island under its own name. In 1993, its subsidiary, Air Charter, began operating flights between Paris and Taipei via Hong Kong. Japan Asia Airways
(JAA) was a subsidiary of Japan Airlines (JAL) which existed between 1975 and 2008. JAA was headquartered in the Japan Airlines Building in Shinagawa, Tokyo. JAA was established as a wholly owned subsidiary of JAL on 8 August 1975 and given the responsibility of providing air links between Japan and Taiwan, formerly offered by JAL. Direct flights between Japan had been suspended since April 1975, following the signing of a civil air treaty with the People's Republic of China. However, following negotiations between the Interchange Association, Japan and Taiwan's Association of East Asian Relations, JAA was created and direct flights to Taipei were resumed. JAA began flights to Taipei on September 15, 1975. Similar arrangements were later made by Air France, British Airways, KLM, Qantas and Swissair for their services to Taiwan.
