Swimming At The 2022 ASEAN Para Games
The 2022 ASEAN Para Games, officially known as the 11th ASEAN Para Games, is an upcoming biannual multi-sport event for athletes with physical disabilities to be hosted in Surakarta, Indonesia. Participants are expected from 11 countries in Southeast Asia. The games are patterned after the Paralympics. Originally set to be host by Vietnam in 2021, the Games were initially cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic before hosting rights were transferred to Indonesia. It is also originally scheduled from 23 to 30 July 2022, later moved to 30 July to 6 August 2022. Development Host selection Originally the 2021 ASEAN Para Games was intended to be held in Vietnam, the same host nation as the 2021 Southeast Asian Games. Paralympic Swimming
Para swimming is an adaptation of the sport of swimming for athletes with disabilities. Para swimmers compete at the Summer Paralympic Games and at other sports competitions throughout the world. The sport is governed by the International Paralympic Committee. Both men and women compete in para swimming, racing against competitors of their own gender. Swimming has been a part of the Paralympic program since the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, Italy. Rules Rules for the sport are adapted from those set forth by the International Swimming Federation (FINA). Swimmers compete individually in backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle, individual medley, and as teams in relay races. 2017 ASEAN Para Games
The 2017 ASEAN Para Games ( ms, Sukan Para ASEAN 2017), officially known as the 9th ASEAN Para Games ( ms, Sukan Para ASEAN ke-9), was a Southeast Asian disabled multi-sport event held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 17 days after the 2017 Southeast Asian Games from 17 to 23 September 2017. This was the third time Malaysia host the ASEAN Para Games and its first time since 2009. Previously, Malaysia also hosted the inaugural games in 2001. Around 1452 athletes participated at the event, which featured 369 events in 16 sports. It was opened by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Najib Razak at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium. The final medal tally was led by Indonesia, followed by host Malaysia and Thailand, while East Timor won its first ever ASEAN Para Games gold medals. Toh Wei Soong (; born 11 September 1998) is a Singaporean freestyle and butterfly swimmer. He was a bronze medallist in the S7 50 metre Freestyle at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and a two-time gold medallist at the 2018 Asian Para Games for the S7 50 metre Freestyle and the S7 100 metre Freestyle events. At the 2020 Summer Olympics, Toh finished fourth in the S7 50 metre Butterfly final, missing a bronze medal by 0.16 seconds. Gary Adornado Bejino (born November 6, 1995) is a Filipino swimmer who competed at the 2020 Summer Paralympics. Early life Gary Bejino was born on November 6, 1995 and was the second eldest in a brood of six. His father is a laborer while his mother is a homemaker. At age 7, he acquired his disability when he was electrocuted when he held on to a live power cable. He sustained serious burns which required his right arm and left leg to be amputated. Growing up in Albay, Bejino spent his 1st to 4th grade elementary education before moving to a foundation ran by priests. Career Bejino took up swimming when he moved to Metro Manila. Ernie Agat Gawilan is a Filipino swimmer who competed at the 2016 and 2020 Summer Paralympics and was the first gold medalist for the Philippines in the Asian Para Games. Early life Gawilan was born in the Paquibato district of Davao City with underdeveloped extremities resulting to him lacking both legs and an underdeveloped left limb due to surviving an attempted abortion and poor pre-natal healthcare in the Marilog District of Davao City. He was orphaned at the young age after his father left him. His mother died of cholera when he was still five months old and his father left Ernie and his mother after the patriarch discovered his mother's infidelity. Theresa Goh Rui Si BBM (; born 16 February 1987) is a Singaporean swimmer and Paralympic medalist, with a bronze at the SB4 100m breaststroke at the 2016 Summer Paralympics.
