Swimming At The 2004 Summer Olympics – Women's 200 Metre Breaststroke
The women's 200 metre breaststroke event at the 2004 Olympic Games was contested at the Olympic Aquatic Centre of the Athens Olympic Sports Complex in Athens, Greece on August 18 and 19. U.S. swimmer and world-record holder Amanda Beard completed a full set of medals in the event, adding a gold to her silver from Atlanta (1996) and bronze from Sydney (2000). She posted an Olympic record of 2:23.37, holding off Australia's Leisel Jones by 0.23 of a second for a silver medal in 2:23.60. Anne Poleska, who had been seventh at the halfway mark, moved quickly into the field and finished strongly with a bronze in a personal best of 2:25.82, earning Germany's first individual medal of the meet since its reunification in 1990. Athens Olympic Aquatic Centre
The Athens Olympic Aquatic Centre is a complex at the Athens Olympic Sports Complex, consisting of two outdoor pools and one indoor pool, that was built for the 1991 Mediterranean Games. It was refurbished and expanded for the 2004 Summer Olympics. The larger of the outdoor pools, which seats 11,500 spectators, hosted Swimming at the 2004 Summer Olympics, swimming and Water Polo at the 2004 Summer Olympics, water polo events. The smaller pool, which hosted Synchronized Swimming at the 2004 Summer Olympics, synchronized swimming, sat 5,300 fans. The indoor pool, which hosted the Diving at the 2004 Summer Olympics, diving events, sat 6,200 observers. It is used for swimming, too. Inna Vitalievna Kapishina ( be, Іна Вітальеўна Капішына; born December 30, 1984) is a Belarusian former swimmer, who specialized in breaststroke events. She is a multiple-time Belarusian champion and three-time national record holder in her respective discipline (50, 100, and 200 m). Kapishina made her Olympic debut at the 2004 Athens Olympics, competing in a breaststroke double. In the 100 m breaststroke, she won the second heat by approximately two seconds ahead of Cuba's Imaday Nuñez Gonzalez in 1:10.66. Lauren Van Oosten
Lauren van Oosten (born November 17, 1978) is a Canadian competition swimmer and a breaststroke specialist. Biography She is originally from Nanaimo, British Columbia and is of Dutch heritage. She grew up and learned to swim in Nanaimo, before moving to the national training centre at the University of Calgary in Calgary, Alberta. Lauren has been an integral part of the National Swim Team since 1997. Since then she has won a total of 9 international medals (bronze, silver and gold) and has set two Canadian records, one (200 m breaststroke) that still stands and one (100 m breaststroke) that lasted for six years (1998–2004). She attributes much of her success to her coach, Jan Bidrman. Her first international meet was the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Fukuoka, Japan in August 1997. Marina Kuč ( sr, Марина Куч; born June 20, 1985, in Essen, Germany) is a former German and Montenegrin swimmer, who specialized in breaststroke events. She is a two-time Olympian (2004 and 2008) and competed in several World- and European Championships. She was member of SG Essen until 2005. From 2005 she competed as a member of Düsseldorf SC 1898 club in Düsseldorf, Germany, under head coach Torsten Petsch. She was the first woman to represent Montenegro at the Olympics. Kuc was several times German Junior Champ and German Championship medalist and competed for the german national team until she changed to compete for her parents native country Serbia and Montenegro at the European Championship in Madrid and the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. Chiara Boggiatto (born 17 February 1986 in Moncalieri, Turin) is an Italian breaststroke swimmer. She was several times finalist in European and World Championship swimming 200 m breaststroke and relays. QI Hui (齐晖, born 13 January 1985 in Fuzhou, Fujian) is an Olympic and former world record holding breaststroke swimmer from China. She held the world record in the long course women's 200 breaststroke from April 2001 – July 2004. She specializes in breaststroke but is also an individual medley swimmer. Mirna Jukić
Mirna Jukić (born 9 April 1986) is a retired Austrian swimmer who won a bronze medal in both short course and long course at the world championships in swimming. She is trained by her father Željko Jukić, a former basketball player. She has had numerous European and World championship successes. Family Jukić was born in Novi Sad, Serbia and grew up in Vukovar, Croatia. In November 1991, the family moved to Zagreb, and her father started training her at Mladost in 1996. Her brother, Dinko Jukić, with whom she was trained early on, also became an international-level swimmer. In the autumn of 1999, the family moved to Vienna, Austria, and the same year Mirna became an Austrian citizen. Caroline Bruce
Caroline Cadman Bruce (born June 9, 1986), later known by her married name Caroline McAndrew, is an American former competition swimmer who represented the United States at the 2004 Summer Olympics and placed ninth in the breaststroke. She competed in the preliminary heats of the women's 200-meter breaststroke. After the 2004 Olympics, Bruce attended Stanford University, where she competed for the Stanford Cardinal women's swimming team, specializing in the breaststroke and individual medley events. Bruce was the 2005 NCAA champion in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke, and received 13 All-American honors during her college career. Birte Steven (born 11 October 1980) is a German former swimmer, who specialized in breaststroke events. She is a ten-time All-Pacific honoree, and also a sixth-place finalist in the 200 m breaststroke at the 2007 FINA World Championships in Melbourne, Australia. Since 2007, Steven currently holds a long-course German record of 2:25.33 from the national championships. Steven qualified for the women's 200 m breaststroke at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, by attaining an A-standard entry time of 2:25.95 from the German Olympic trials. In the morning's preliminary heats, Steven recorded the seventh fastest time of 2:27.42 to secure her spot in the semifinal run. Brooke Hanson
Brooke Louise Hanson, OAM (born 18 March 1978) is an Australian former competitive swimmer, Olympic gold medallist, world champion, and former world record-holder. Career A swimmer since the age of four, Hanson was the youngest swimmer on the Australian national team at the 1994 Commonwealth Games, where she finished fourth in the 200-metre breaststroke. However, she would not qualify for another major international competition for eight years, until she qualified for the 100- and 200-metre breaststroke at the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
