Swimming At The 2000 Summer Olympics – Women's 100 Metre Breaststroke
The women's 100 metre breaststroke event at the 2000 Summer Olympics took place on 17–18 September at the Sydney International Aquatic Centre in Sydney, Australia. At only 16 years of age, U.S. swimmer Megan Quann fulfilled her merciless prediction by knocking off South Africa's defending Olympic champion Penny Heyns in the event. Coming from third at the final turn, she surged powerfully past the champion over the last 25 metres to snatch the gold medal in a new American record of 1:07.05, just a small fraction closer to an Olympic standard. Tarnee White
Tarnee Renee White, OAM (born 17 October 1981), also known by her married name Tarnee Southwell, is an Australian breaststroke swimmer who won a silver medal in the 4×100-metre medley relay at the 2000 Summer Olympics. Coming from the Redcliffe club in Queensland, and coached by Ken Wood, White made her international debut at the 1999 Pan Pacific Championships in Sydney, where she came 7th in the 100-metre breaststroke. At the Sydney Olympics the following year, White swum the breaststroke leg in the heats of the 4×100-metre medley relay, before being replaced by fellow Wood swimmer Leisel Jones in the team that trailed the United States home in the final. Rhiannon Leier (born May 30, 1977) is a Canadian former competition swimmer who specialized in breaststroke events. She is a multiple-time Canadian record holder, a two-time finalist at the FINA World Championships (2001 and 2003), and a six-time NCAA All-American honoree. She also won a bronze medal, as a member of the Canadian swimming team, in the women's 4x100-metre medley relay at the 2002 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Yokohama, Japan, clocking at 4:05.59. Leier is also the granddaughter of former baseball player, track athlete, and ice hockey player Edward Leier, who played two seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks in the National Hockey League. Svitlana Bondarenko ( uk, Світлана Бондаренко; born 12 August 1971 in Zaporizhzhia) is a former international breaststroke swimmer from Ukraine. She swam at three Olympics (1996, 2000 and 2004), multiple World Championships and European Championships, and several other meets during her international career from 1991 to 2010. Brigitte Becue (born 18 September 1972 in Ostend) is a retired breaststroke and medley swimmer from Belgium, who competed for her native country at four consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 1988.
