Swimming At The 1978 Commonwealth Games
The 1978 Commonwealth Games were held in Edmonton, Alberta from 3 to 12 August 1978, two years after the 1976 Summer Olympics were held in Montreal, Quebec. They were boycotted by Nigeria, in protest at New Zealand's sporting contacts with apartheid-era South Africa, as well as by Uganda, in protest at alleged Canadian hostility towards the government of Idi Amin. The Bid Election was held at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. This was the first Commonwealth Games where a computerised system was used to handle ticket sales. These were the first Commonwealth Games to be named ''Commonwealth Games'', having dropped ''British''. The Games were opened by Queen Elizabeth II for the first time since becoming Queen in 1952. Stephen J. "Steve" Poulter (born 18 February 1961, in Whalley, Lancashire) is a retired British swimmer. Swimming career Poulter competed at the 1980 and 1984 Olympics. He represented England and won a silver medal in the 400 metres individual medley, at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Four years later he represented England and won a bronze medal in the 400 metres individual medley, at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland. Jeffrey Sheehan is a Canadian former freestyle and medley swimmer of the 1980s. Sheehan, a Connecticut-born swimmer, won a bronze medal for Canada in the 200 metre medley at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane. Robin Brew (born 28 June 1962) is a male former competition swimmer for Great Britain and Scotland. Swimming career Brew represented Great Britain at the Olympic Games and Scotland in the Commonwealth Games. He swam in the men's 200-metre individual medley at the 1984 Summer Olympics where he came fourth. His greatest sporting moment came at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics when he broke the Olympic record in the 200-metre individual medley in the semifinals. Alex Baumann
Alexander Baumann, (born April 21, 1964) is a Canadian sports administrator and former competitive swimmer who won two gold medals and set two world records at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. In 2007, he was regarded by the national broadcaster as "the greatest swimmer in Canadian history", as the twin Olympic gold medals were Canada's first in swimming since 1912. Since he retired from competitive swimming, he has worked as an administrator in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. In May 2021, Baumann was appointed Chief Executive of Swimming Australia. Jonathan Scott Sieben, OAM (born 24 August 1966) is an Australian former butterfly swimmer of the 1980s, who won gold in the 200-metre butterfly at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles Olympics. Hailing from Brisbane, Queensland, Sieben was coached by Laurie Lawrence, and made his debut at the young age of 15 at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, where he captured a bronze in the 200-metre butterfly, as well as gold in the medley relay. Sieben and Lawrence continued their preparation for Los Angeles, but were given little chance. Paul Rowe (swimmer)
Paul Colin Rowe is a New Zealand-born Australian former swimmer of the 1970s and 1980s. Born in New Zealand, Rowe won national titles in his native country for butterfly and freestyle. He represented New Zealand at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, coming fourth in the 100 metre butterfly. Rowe came to Australia in 1979 for training in the lead up to the 1980 Moscow Olympics, where he had been due to swim for the New Zealand delegation. New Zealand ended up boycotting the games and in 1981 he became a naturalised Australian. At the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, he was a member of the Australian gold medal-winning freestyle relay team, as well as a silver medalist in the 200 metre butterfly. Tom Ponting
Thomas Harold Ponting (born January 28, 1965) is a Canadian former competitive swimmer who specialized in the butterfly stroke. Ponting competed in three consecutive Summer Olympics for Canada starting with the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California. At every occasion he won a medal with the men's 4 × 100 m medley relay team: two silver and one bronze. At the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) swimming championships in 1989, Ponting broke the world and Canadian records in the 100-metre butterfly, with a time of 52.62 seconds. Dan Thompson (born June 15, 1956) is a Canadians, Canadian retired swimmer. He competed in the butterfly swimming, butterfly events during the 1970s and early 1980s. Glenn Stuart Beringen (born 16 September 1964) is an Australian international swimming coach and former athlete. He won a silver medal for breaststroke at the 1984 Summer Olympics and 1982 Commonwealth Games. Major competitions At the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Beringen won the silver medal in the 200-metre men's breaststroke final, 2.81 seconds behind the winner Victor Davis. At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Beringen won a silver medal in the 200-metre breaststroke event, again as runner-up to Davis.
