Swimming At The 1972 Summer Olympics – Men's 200 Metre Freestyle
The men's 200 metre freestyle event at the 1972 Summer Olympics took place on August 29 at the Olympia Schwimmhalle. There were 46 competitors from 27 nations, with each nation having up to three swimmers. The event was won by Mark Spitz of the United States, the nation's second victory in the event (68 years, but only two appearances of the event, apart). It was the third gold medal for Spitz in 1972, halfway to his goal of six (he would ultimately finish the Games with seven). His teammate Steve Genter took silver, with Werner Lampe of West Germany earning bronze. Defending champion Michael Wenden of Australia finished fourth. Background This was the fourth appearance of the 200 metre freestyle event. It was first contested in 1900. It would be contested a second time, though at 220 yards, in 1904. Olympia Schwimmhalle
The Olympia Schwimmhalle is an aquatics centre located in the Olympiapark in Munich, Germany. It hosted the swimming, diving, water polo, and the swimming part of the modern pentathlon events at the 1972 Summer Olympics. Viktor Georgiyevich Mazanov (russian: Виктор Георгиевич Мазанов; born 8 March 1947) is a retired Russian Swimming (sport), swimmer who competed in nine events at the 1964 Summer Olympics, 1964, 1968 Summer Olympics, 1968 and 1972 Summer Olympics. He won two Silver medal, silver and two Bronze medal, bronze medals in Freestyle swimming, freestyle and Medley swimming, medley relays in 1968 and 1972. Robert Nay
Robert John Nay (15 November 1956 – 7 November 1992) was a competitive swimmer from Australia. Nay competed in the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany, but failed to reach the finals. His daughter Meagen Nay competed for Australia at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, coming seventh in the 200-metre backstroke. He was killed in a car accident. Brian Brinkley (born 28 December 1953) is an English former competitive swimmer who represented Great Britain in the Olympic Games, FINA world championships and European championships, and England in the Commonwealth Games, during the 1970s. During his elite swimming career, he won thirteen medals in major international swimming championships. Wilfried Hartung (born 16 August 1953) is a retired German swimmer. Born in East Berlin, East Germany, he competed at the 1972 and 1976 Summer Olympics and won a bronze medal in the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay in 1972. Mike Wenden
Michael Vincent Wenden, (born 17 November 1949) is a champion swimming (sport), swimmer who represented Australia in the 1968 Summer Olympics and 1972 Summer Olympics. In 1968 he won four medals: gold in both the 100- and 200-metre freestyle (setting world records in each) and a silver and a bronze in freestyle relays. Wenden was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1979. He was one of the eight bearers of the Olympic Flag at the opening ceremony of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. Wenden was appointed an MBE in 1969 and made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2006 Australia Day Honours for "service to the Olympic movement as an administrator and competitor". Vladimir Valeryevich Bure (russian: Владимир Валерьевич Буре, born 4 December 1950) is a Russian former freestyle swimmer and a fitness coach for the New Jersey Devils of the NHL. Bure is the father of retired NHL players Pavel and Valeri Bure. USSR Bure competed for the Soviet Union at the 1968, 1972 and 1976 Olympics and won four medals: one in the individual 100 m and three in the relay.
