Swimming At The 1968 Summer Olympics – Men's 4 × 100 Metre Medley Relay
The men's 4×100 metre medley relay event at the 1968 Olympic Games took place on October 26. This swimming event uses medley swimming as a relay. Because an Olympic size swimming pool is 50 metres long, each of the four swimmers completed two lengths of the pool, each using a different stroke. Swimming is an individual or team racing sport that requires the use of one's entire body to move through water. The sport takes place in pools or open water (e.g., in a sea or lake). Competitive swimming is one of the most popular Olympic sports, with varied distance events in butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle, and individual medley. In addition to these individual events, four swimmers can take part in either a freestyle or medley relay. A medley relay consists of four swimmers who will each swim a different stroke, ordered as backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and freestyle. Swimming each stroke requires a set of specific techniques; in competition, there are distinct regulations concerning the acceptable form for each individual stroke. John Alexander Gilchrist (born November 9, 1945) is a Canadian former swimmer. Swimming career Gilchrist competed in the 1964 Summer Olympics and 1968 Summer Olympics, with his best performance being in 1968, finishing fourth in the 4x200 metres relay. Tom Arusoo
Toomas "Tom" Arusoo (born July 22, 1948) was a Canadian competition swimmer who swam for Canada in several international meets including the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. Early life Tom Arusoo's parents were both competitive athletes in Estonia; his father was a national champion swimmer in long-distance freestyle, and his mother was the second-ranked tennis player in the country. They emigrated to Sweden in 1944 as refugees, where their son Toomas was born. They then emigrated to Canada, settling in Montreal. Swimming career As a child, Arusoo started competitively swimming for the Montreal Athletic Association, specializing in the butterfly stroke. William Victor Mahony (born September 16, 1949) is a former breaststroke swimmer who represented Canada in multiple international championships from 1966 to 1974, including two Summer Olympics, the Pan American Games, and two Commonwealth Games. Nikolay Pankin
Nikolai Ivanovich Pankin (russian: Николай Иванович Панкин; born 2 January 1949 – 13 October 2018) was a Russian breaststroke swimmer and swimming coach.
He competed at the 1968, 1972 and 1976 Olympics in the 100 m and 200 m breaststroke and 4 × 100 m medley relay. In 1968 he won a bronze medal in the 100 m and narrowly missed a bronze in the 200 m; he also swam the semifinal for the Soviet medley relay team that won a bronze medal. Pankin was less successful in 1972 and 1976, and finished close to the podium in the medley relay. At the 1970 and 1974 European Championships, Pankin won a medal in each of the three events he competed.
