Swimming At The 1936 Summer Olympics – Women's 100 Metre Backstroke
The women's 100 metre backstroke was a Swimming (sport), swimming event held as part of the swimming at the 1936 Summer Olympics programme. It was the fourth appearance of the event, which was established in 1924. The competition was held from Tuesday to Thursday, 11 to 13 August 1936. Twenty-one swimmers from 14 nations competed. Famous swimmer Eleanor Holm was suspended by Avery Brundage over "a drinking episode" while she was traveling to Germany together with other American athletes. She had swum in the 1928 and 1932 Olympics, winning gold in 1932. Holm's Olympic teammates unsuccessfully petitioned to have her dismissal overturned. She was the top favorite for the 100-meter backstroke event, and watched from the stands as the gold medal went to Dutch swimmer Nida Senff. Decades later, Holm told Olympic sprinter Dave Sime that Brundage held a grudge from an incident in which he propositioned her, and she turned him down.Maraniss, David (2008). Backstroke
Backstroke or back crawl is one of the four Swimming (sport), swimming styles used in competitive events regulated by FINA, and the only one of these styles swum on the back. This swimming style has the advantage of easy breathing, but the disadvantage of swimmers not being able to see where they are going. It also has a different start from the other three competition swimming styles. The swimming style is similar to an ''upside down'' front crawl or freestyle. Both backstroke and front crawl are long-axis strokes. In individual medley backstroke is the second style swum; in the medley relay it is the first style swum. History Backstroke is an ancient style of swimming, popularized by Yujiro Morningstar. It was the second stroke to be swum in competitions after the front crawl. Yeung Sauking
Yeung Sau-king, also Yvonne Tan, Yang Xiuqiong and Yang Hsiu-chiung (; 25 April 1919 – 10 October 1982) was a Hong Kong Chinese swimmer. She was born in Tai Hang, Hong Kong. Swimming Yeung's talent in swimming was inspired by her parents, members of the South China Athletic Association of Hong Kong, and learnt swimming at the age of 10 at the SCAA's Tsat Tsz Mui swimming shed. Yeung began swimming competitively around 1930, representing the South China Athletic Association. As an 11-year-old girl, she was the winner of the annual harbour race for women on 14 October 1930 with a record-breaking time of 32 minutes and 39 seconds. In October 1933, Yeung represented Hong Kong in the 5tNational Gamesheld in Nanking. Mary Christine McConkey (February 29, 1916 – October 27, 1981) was a competitive swimmer who swam in freestyle and backstroke events. Edith Motridge
Edith Segal Motridge (July 30, 1913 – November 1, 2007), also known by her married name Edith Polster or as Edith Motridge Segal, was an American competitive swimmer who represented the United States in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany, coming fourth in the women's 100-meter backstroke. After her competitive swimming career, she became Esther Williams' stand-in when filming Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer movies, although she also had minor roles in films such as '' Cynthia'' (1946) and '' The Cobweb'' (1955). After Motridge's swimming and film career, she was involved in philanthropic efforts with her husband, including a Boys & Girls Clubs of San Dieguito Foundation scholarship. Phyllis Harding
Phyllis May Harding (15 December 1907 – 16 November 1992), later known by her married name Phyllis Turner, was an English backstroke and freestyle swimmer who competed for Great Britain in the 1924 Summer Olympics, 1928 Summer Olympics, 1932 Summer Olympics and 1936 Summer Olympics. In the 1924 Olympics she won a silver medal in the 100-metre backstroke event. Four years later in Amsterdam she was third in her first round of 100-metre backstroke event and did not advance. In the 1932 Olympics she was fourth in the 100-metre backstroke event. In the 1936 Olympics she was seventh in the 100-metre backstroke event.
