The men's 1500 metre freestyle was a swimming event held as part of the swimming at the 1936 Summer Olympics At the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, eleven swimming events were contested, six for men and five for women. Freestyle Swimming
Freestyle is a category of swimming competition, defined by the rules of the International Swimming Federation (FINA), in which competitors are subject to a few limited restrictions on their swimming stroke. Freestyle races are the most common of all swimming competitions, with distances beginning with 50 meters (50 yards) and reaching 1500 meters (1650 yards), also known as the mile. The term 'freestyle stroke' is sometimes used as a synonym for 'front crawl', as front crawl is the fastest surface swimming stroke. It is now the most common stroke used in freestyle competitions. The first Olympics held open water swimming events, but after a few Olympics, closed water swimming was introduced. The front crawl or freestyle was the first event that was introduced. Norman Wainwright
Norman Wainwright (4 July 1914 – 2 May 2000) was an English freestyle and backstroke swimmer who competed for Great Britain in the 1932 Summer Olympics, in the 1936 Summer Olympics, and in the 1948 Summer Olympics. He was born in Stoke-on-Trent. In 1932 he was eliminated in the first round of the 400 metre freestyle event. Four years later he was a member of the British team which finished sixth with the British team in the 4×200 metre freestyle relay competition at the 1936 Games. In the 1500 metre freestyle contest he was eliminated in the semi-finals and in the 400 metre freestyle event he was eliminated in the first round. His last Olympic appearance was in 1948 when he competed with the British team in the 4×200 metre freestyle relay competition which did not advance to the final.
