Swimming At The 1920 Summer Olympics – Women's 100 Metre Freestyle
The women's 100 metre freestyle was a Swimming (sport), swimming event held as part of the swimming at the 1920 Summer Olympics programme. It was the second appearance of the event, which was one of the two women's events held in 1912. A total of 19 swimmers from nine nations competed in the event, which was held on Monday, August 23 and on Wednesday, August 25, 1920. Records These were the standing world and Olympic records (in minutes) prior to the 1920 Summer Olympics. Frances Schroth broke the Olympic record in the first semifinal with a time of 1 minute 18.0 seconds. Ethelda Bleibtrey broke the world record in the third semifinal with 1 minute 14.4 seconds and lowered her own new record again in the final with 1 minute 13.6 seconds. Ethelda Marguerite Bleibtrey (February 27, 1902 – May 6, 1978), also known by her married name Ethelda Schlatke, was an American competition swimmer, three-time Olympic gold medalist, and former world record-holder in multiple events. Lily Beaurepaire
Lilian De Beaurepaire (15 September 1892 - 24 November 1979), also known by her married name Lilian Clarke, was an Australian swimmer and diver. She competed at the 1920 Summer Olympics in the 100-metre and 400-mete freestyle and plain high diving, but failed to reach the finals. Her brother Frank Beaurepaire was an Olympic swimmer. She was the daughter of Francis Edmund de Beaurepaire, sailor, tram-conductor, trader, and (later) hotel proprietor, and his wife Mary Edith, née Inman. In 1936, she married Herbert Clarke. The Lillian Beaurepaire Memorial Swimming Pool on the Lorne foreshore was opened by Melbourne City Councillor Ian Beaurepaire CMG in December 1967. For many years she was Lorne's only lifesaver. She died on 24 November 1979 at Chesterfield Private Hospital, Geelong. Germaine van Dievoet (, 26 September 1899 – 30 October 1990) was a Belgian competitive and olympic swimmer. Career Germaine Van Dievoet was the Belgian champion for the 100m women's freestyle in 1920, 1921, 1922 and 1923. She was one of only ten Belgian women to have participated in the 1920 Summer Olympics, which took place in Antwerp from 20 April until 12 September 1920.
