London Aquatics Centre
The London Aquatics Centre is an indoor facility with two swimming pools and a diving pool in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, London. The centre, designed by architect Zaha Hadid as one of the main venues of the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Paralympics, was used for the swimming, diving and synchronised swimming events. After significant modification, the centre opened to the public in March 2014. Design The centre was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Zaha Hadid in 2004 before London won the bid for the 2012 Summer Olympics. It was built alongside the Water Polo Arena and opposite the Olympic Stadium on the opposite bank of the Waterworks River. The site is high, long, and wide. Sharath M. Gayakwad is an Indian Paralympic swimmer from Bangalore. At the 2014 Asian Games, he broke P.T. Usha's record for most number of medals by an Indian at any multi-discipline event by winning 6 medals. Coming from a modest financial background, he has over 30 international and 40 national medals to his credit, one of them being the bronze medal at the 2010 Asian Para Games. Thomas Young (born 3 May 1991) is a British Paralympic swimmer. He represented Britain at the 2012 London Paralympics and has won medals at both the long course and short course World Championships. Personal history Young was born in Lancaster, England in 1991. He was born without a right hand and forearm and two club feet. Swimming career Young was introduced to swimming at the age of five by his mother, who wanted him to be able to swim as he became older. He began competing at the age of 12 and was subsequently classified as a S8 disability swimmer. In 2008 Young attempted to qualify for the British team for the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, but missed out on a place in the 400m freestyle event by 0.3 seconds. Blake Cochrane, (born 25 January 1991) is a retired Australian Paralympic swimmer. He won a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Paralympics, two gold medals at the 2012 London Paralympics, a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Paralympics, and a silver and one bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. Denis Tarasov (born 31 July 1993) is a Paralympic swimmer from Russia competing mainly in category S8 events.
