Sweetwater Reporter
The ''Sweetwater Reporter'' is a newspaper based in Sweetwater, Texas, covering the Nolan County area of West Texas. Owned by Horizon Publications Inc., it publishes an evening paper six days a week, Sunday through Friday. History The newspaper was founded in 1881, the same year as its city and county, as the ''Sweetwater Advance'', by Charles Edwin Gilbert, founder of the nearby Abilene Reporter. It later published as the ''Nolan County Review'' and became the daily ''Reporter'' in 1911 under publisher John W. Millsaps and his partner W.A. Perry. In 1930, it was purchased by Harte-Hanks, who sent publisher Millard Cope to run the paper. In 1973, Donrey Media Group bought the paper and it was sold to Community Newspaper Holdings (CNHI) in 1998. Sweetwater, Texas
Sweetwater is a municipality in and the seat of Nolan County, Texas, United States. It is 123 miles southeast of Lubbock and 40 miles west of Abilene, Texas. Its population was 10,906 at the 2010 census. History The town's name "Sweetwater" is the English translation of the Kiowa language word "Mobeetie". Sweetwater received a U.S. post office in 1879. The Texas and Pacific Railway started service in 1881, with the first train arriving on March 12 of that year, beginning Sweetwater's long history as a railroad town. To encourage the railroads, Sweetwater increased its water supply by building a small town lake called City Lake in 1898 (now called Newman Park), then three larger lakes were constructed thereafter. Construction began on the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway in 1903. Nolan County, Texas
Nolan County is a county located in the west-central region of the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 14,738. Its county seat is Sweetwater. The county was created in 1876 and organized in 1881. It is named for Philip Nolan, one of the first American traders to visit Texas. West Texas
West Texas is a loosely defined region in the U.S. state of Texas, generally encompassing the arid and semiarid lands west of a line drawn between the cities of Wichita Falls, Abilene, and Del Rio. No consensus exists on the boundary between East Texas and West Texas. ''Abilene Reporter-News'' is a daily newspaper based in Abilene, Texas, United States. The newspaper started publishing as the weekly ''Abilene Reporter'', helmed by Charles Edwin Gilbert on June 17, 1881, just three months after Abilene was founded. It is hence the oldest continuous business in the city. It became a daily newspaper in 1885. History Two months after starting the paper, a fire destroyed several buildings in Abilene, including Gilbert's office. He rode the train 21 miles east to Baird and used a borrowed printing press to produce an extra edition on the fire. Two other Abilene papers began publication in the 1880s.
