''Sweetie'' is a 1929 American pre-Code musical film directed by Frank Tuttle, written by George Marion Jr. and Lloyd Corrigan, and starring Nancy Carroll, Helen Kane, Jack Oakie, William Austin, Stuart Erwin, and Wallace MacDonald. It was released on November 2, 1929, by Paramount Pictures. Plot School spirit is high at Pelham University, which finally has a football team that can beat the rival school, Oglethorpe. What almost nobody knows is that Biff Bentley, the team captain, is planning to quit school to marry his chorus-girl fiancee, Barbara Pell. When, at the last minute, he's talked into staying for the good of the team, Barbara is furious that he's putting football ahead of his love for her. It has left her in an uncomfortable position as well: She had quit a good job in order to marry him and will not be able to get that job back. Frank Wright Tuttle (August 6, 1892 – January 6, 1963) was a Cinema of the United States, Hollywood film director and writer who directed films from 1922 (''The Cradle Buster'') to 1959 (''Island of Lost Women''). Joseph Depew (July 11, 1912 – October 30, 1988) was an American television director and producer and actor. Career Born in Harrison, New Jersey, Depew began his career as a child stage actor at the age of three. He was influenced by his mother, also a stage performer. He later worked as a second unit director or an assistant director in 22 films and 26 television series episodes. Aileen Manning (January 20, 1886 – March 25, 1946) was an American film actress. Manning was in demand as a character actress in silent films. She was known for her roles in silent and early talkie films, including ''Uncle Tom's Cabin'' (1927) and ''Huckleberry Finn'' (1931). About her performance in '' Everybody's Sweetheart'' (1920), ''Variety'' wrote that she "makes the character necessarily disagreeable, but true to life". She played Queen Anne in '' A Lady of Quality'' (1924); it was noted that she bore a resemblance to the character she was playing. She played another queen, Elizabeth I, in the MGM short '' The Virgin Queen'' (1928). Manning lived at Hollywood-by-the-Sea. She died on March 25, 1946 in Hollywood. Charles A. Sellon (August 24, 1870 – June 26, 1937) was an American stage and film actor. Sellon appeared in more than 100 films and stage acts between 1901 and 1935. He played the blind Mr. Muckle in W. C. Fields' comedy ''It's a Gift'' (1934) and the wheelchair-using uncle in '' Bright Eyes'' (1934) with Shirley Temple.
