Sweethearts (1997 Film)
''Sweethearts'' is a 1997 American independent film written and directed by Aleks Horvat and starring Janeane Garofalo and Mitch Rouse. The supporting cast features Margaret Cho and Bobcat Goldthwait as well as a cameo appearance by singer/guitarist Stephen Malkmus of the band Pavement (band), Pavement. Plot Arliss meets Jasmine on a blind date at a coffeehouse, but it turns out Jasmine has bipolar disorder, bipolar, carrying a gun and contemplating suicide. Jasmine introduces herself to Arliss as "Emily", a fake character she created to pretend she is not his date. She pretends to be somebody else that went to the same coffee shop. Eventually Arliss discovers that she is his date pretending to be another person and he gets mad. She forces him to stay by holding a gun in front of his face. ALEKS (Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces) is an Internet, online tutoring and assessment program that includes course material in mathematics, chemistry, introductory statistics, and business. Rather than being based on numerical Test (assessment), test scores, ALEKS uses the theory of knowledge spaces to develop a combinatorics, combinatorial understanding of the set of topics a student does or doesn't understand from the answers to its test questions. Based on this assessment, it determines the topics that the student is ready to learn and allows the student to choose from interactive learning modules for these topics. ALEKS was initially developed at UC Irvine starting in 1994 with support from a large National Science Foundation grant. Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder, previously known as manic depression, is a mental disorder characterized by periods of depression and periods of abnormally elevated mood that last from days to weeks each. If the elevated mood is severe or associated with psychosis, it is called mania; if it is less severe, it is called hypomania. During mania, an individual behaves or feels abnormally energetic, happy or irritable, and they often make impulsive decisions with little regard for the consequences. There is usually also a reduced need for sleep during manic phases. During periods of depression, the individual may experience crying and have a negative outlook on life and poor eye contact with others. The risk of suicide is high; over a period of 20 years, 6% of those with bipolar disorder died by suicide, while 30–40% engaged in self-harm. Suicide is the act of intentionally causing one's own death. Mental disorders (including depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, personality disorders, anxiety disorders), physical disorders (such as chronic fatigue syndrome), and substance abuse (including alcoholism and the use of and withdrawal from benzodiazepines) are risk factors. Pavement (band)
Pavement is an American indie rock band that formed in Stockton, California, in 1989. For most of their career, the group consisted of Stephen Malkmus (vocals and guitar), Scott Kannberg (guitar and vocals), Mark Ibold (bass), Steve West (drums) and Bob Nastanovich (percussion and vocals). Initially conceived as a recording project, the band at first avoided press or live performances, while attracting considerable underground attention with their early releases. Gradually evolving into a more polished band, Pavement recorded five full-length albums and ten EPs over the course of their decade-long career, though they disbanded with some acrimony in 1999 as the members moved on to other projects.
