"Sweetest Smile" is a song by English singer Black, released in June 1987 as the third single from his debut album '' Wonderful Life''. It became his first UK top ten hit, peaking at number 8 on the UK Singles Chart. On the back of its success, " Wonderful Life" was re-released, becoming an international hit. Meaning and reception Speaking in an interview with ''Smash Hits'' in 1987, he said of the song "It's me singing me story of everything that happened to me in 1985, which was a ''rotten'' year. Basically my heart was broken. I was… erm, I'm technically married. Er… I've got an imminent divorce – I've been separated for two years. Er… I've never told anyone that, I shouldn't have said it! ''Wonderful Life'' is the debut album by English singer Black (the stage name of Colin Vearncombe). Released in 1987, it peaked at #3 on the UK Albums Chart in September of that year. Three of the songs were co-written with Vearncombe's friend and musical collaborator, keyboardist Dave "Dix" Dickie. Background In 1985 Vearncombe wrote the minor key song " Wonderful Life". It was released independently through Ugly Man Records, and got Black noticed by A&M Records who signed Vearncombe and launched his international career. Colin Vearncombe (26 May 1962 – 26 January 2016), known by his stage name Black, was an English singer-songwriter. He emerged from the punk rock music scene and achieved mainstream pop success in the late 1980s, most notably with the 1986 single " Wonderful Life", which was an international hit the next year. William Ruhlmann of AllMusic described Vearncombe as a "smoky-voiced singer/songwriter, whose sophisticated jazz-pop songs and dramatic vocal delivery place him somewhere between Bryan Ferry and Morrissey". The Kent Music Report was a weekly record chart of Australian music singles and albums which was compiled by music enthusiast David Kent from May 1974 through to January 1999. The chart was re-branded the Australian Music Report (AMR) in July 1987. From June 1988, the Australian Recording Industry Association, which had been using the top 50 portion of the report under licence since mid-1983, chose to produce their own listing as the ARIA Charts. Before the Kent Report, ''Go-Set'' magazine published weekly Top-40 Singles from 1966, and Album charts from 1970 until the magazine's demise in August 1974. Perry Ogden (born 1961) is a British fashion and documentary photographer, and film director, based in Dublin. He is interested in Traveller culture. The soprano saxophone is a higher-register variety of the saxophone, a woodwind instrument invented in the 1840s. The soprano is the third-smallest member of the saxophone family, which consists (from smallest to largest) of the soprillo, sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, bass, contrabass saxophone and tubax. Soprano saxophones are the smallest and thus highest-pitched saxophone in common use. Jimmy Hughes (British Musician)
James C Hughes is an English bassist who has played with many punk rock and new wave bands, and whose career as a rock musician and writer continues to this day. Born to Irish parents in London, Hughes, inspired by the glam rock sensibilities of his hero Ziggy Stardust, and the bass playing of Free's Andy Fraser, began his career in music at the birth of punk rock with the Banned, enjoying immediate success as their first single "Little Girl" broke into the UK top 30. After the Banned dissolved, Hughes joined Cowboys International, forming a rhythm section with drummer Terry Chimes, formerly of the Clash, together playing on the album '' The Original Sin'' in 1979, and the subsequent tours, television and radio appearances of the band.
