Sweet Lavender (1920 Film)
''Sweet Lavender'' is a 1920 American silent drama film directed by Paul Powell and starring Mary Miles Minter. The scenario was adapted by Beulah Marie Dix from the 1888 play of the same name by Arthur Wing Pinero. Like many of Minter's features, it is thought to be a lost film. Plot As described in various film magazine reviews, Lavender (Minter) lives with her aunt Ruth Holt (Keckley), who runs a boarding house for college boys. Lavender believes that Ruth is her mother; she does not know that her real mother died in childbirth after her husband cast her out for her lower social status. Among the boys at Ruth's boarding house is a freshman called Clem Hale (Goodwin). Some sophomores play a prank on him, tying him to a chair when he is supposed to be giving a speech at a dinner. Lavender deceives the sophomores and rescues Clem from his plight, and a romance develops between them. Paul Powell (director)
Paul Mahlon Powell (September 6, 1881 – July 2, 1944) was an American journalist, film director, director, film producer, producer, screenwriter, and actor. Powell was most active during the silent film era and is best known for directing Mary Pickford in ''Pollyanna (1920 film), Pollyanna'' (1920). Career Born in Peoria, Illinois, Powell was one of six children of Charles Henry and Anna Clara Powell (''née'' von Schoenheider). His father was a publisher who founded the ''Peoria Evening Star''. Powell was educated in Peoria and later attended Bradley University, Bradley Polytechnic Institute. After graduation, he worked at his father's newspaper as a typesetter and editor before becoming a reporter. In the early 1900s, Powell worked as a reporter for the ''Chicago Tribune'' and the ''Los Angeles Express (newspaper), Los Angeles Express''. Sylvia Ashton
Sylvia Ashton (January 26, 1880 – November 18, 1940) was an American film actress of the silent film era. Ashton was born in Denver, Colorado. She bore a heavyset resemblance to Jane Darwell and like Darwell was playing mother and grandmother roles, though more famously than Darwell in the silents, while still in her 30s and 40s. In 1912, Ashton was an actress in D.W. Griffith's stock company. After that, she acted for Famous Players-Lasky. For years she was a regular member of Cecil B. DeMille's troupe of character actors. She appeared in more than 130 films between 1912 and 1929. She retired from movies almost immediately at the dawn of sound, one of her later films being the part-sound film ''The Barker'' (1928). Ashton died on November 18, 1940, aged 60. Theodore Roberts
Theodore Roberts (October 8, 1861 – December 14, 1928) was an American film and stage actor. Early life Roberts was born in San Francisco, California. He was a cousin of the stage actress Florence Roberts. His choice of a career disappointed his mother (who wanted him to become a minister) and his father (who wanted him to learn a trade). Career Roberts debuted on stage at the Baldwin Theatre in San Francisco in 1880. He went on to act with a barnstorming troupe on the West Coast but tired of that lifestyle after several years and left acting for a time to command a schooner owned by his father. On stage in the 1890s he acted with Fanny Davenport in her play ''Gismonda'' (1894) and later in ''The Bird of Paradise'' (1912).
