The 14th IAAF World Championships in Athletics (Moscow 2013) () was an international athletics competition held in Moscow, Russia, from 10–18 August 2013. Initially, Russia won the most gold medals to top the table for the first time since 2001. It was also the first time ever the host nation took the top of the medal table. However, after disqualification of Russian sprinter Antonina Krivoshapka for doping and following redistribution of medals in the Women's 4 × 400 metres relay (as well as after series of other disqualifications of Russian athletes for doping offences), United States topped the medal table with eight golds. In the overall medal count, the United States won 26 medals in total, followed by Kenya with 12. With 1,784 athletes from 203 countries it was the biggest single sports event of the year. The men's discus throw at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics was held at the Luzhniki Stadium on 12–13 August. The three automatic qualifiers turned out to be the three players in this event. On the second throw of the competition Piotr Małachowski took the lead which lasted for about a minute before Gerd Kanter made his first attempt. It was Robert Harting's second attempt that took the lead he would not relinquish. In the fourth round he unleashed his winner at 69.11. Between World Championships and Olympics, he continued his streak of four straight golds. Małachowski's fifth round 68.36 continued his streak of three silvers behind Harting in the same championships. Kanter, Harting's predecessor in both titles, held on for bronze. Niklas Arrhenius (born September 10, 1982) is an American-Swedish track and field athlete who competes in the discus throw and shot put. He represented Sweden in the discus at 2008 Summer Olympics, was a four-time competitor at the World Athletics Championships (2007, 2011, 2013, 2017), and competed at five consecutive editions of the European Athletics Championships from 2006 to 2016. At the Swedish Athletics Championships he won seven national titles in discus, and was an eight-time champion in the shot put (combined indoors and outdoors). Leif Arrhenius (born 15 July 1986 in Provo, Utah) is a professional Swedish athlete competing in the shot put and discus throw. He represented his country at two World and three European Championships. In addition, he is the 2011 US Collegiate Indoor Champion. Born in Utah, Arrhenius has dual Swedish and American citizenship. He is the son of Anders Arrhenius, who was a professional shot put competitor in Sweden. His older brother, Niklas, is also a shot putter and discus thrower. Arrhenius represented Brigham Young University from 2005 and 2008-2011. He was a seven-time All-American while competing for Brigham Young University. He was 2011 NCAA indoor champion in the shot put. Arrhenius now works for Centennial Middle School in Provo, Utah as the Boys' P.E. Coach.
