Swastika Railway Station
Swastika station is located in the community of Swastika, Ontario, Canada. It was established in 1908, along the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway which is now the Ontario Northland Railway line. It was a railway station, station stop for ''Northlander'' trains of Ontario Northland Railway, Ontario Northland. That station is a fairly large building with former entrances on street and platform level but only a small waiting room off the platform is currently in passenger use. The indoor waiting room was once larger and featured a front desk and washrooms. Following the cancellation of the ''Northlander'' service in 2012, the station is now the bus stop location for Ontario Northland Motor Coach Services. The train station began demolition by Ontario Northland Railway on March 10th, 2021. On May 15th, 2021, the Train Station was completely demolished. Swastika, Ontario
Swastika ( or ) is a small community founded around a mine site in Northern Ontario, Canada in 1908. Today it is within the municipal boundaries of Kirkland Lake, Ontario. It has frequently been noted on lists of unusual place names. Swastika is a junction on the Ontario Northland Railway, where a branch to Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec leaves the ONR's main line from North Bay, Ontario to Moosonee. Until 2012, the ''Northlander'' passenger railway service between Toronto and Cochrane served the Swastika railway station with connecting bus service running along Highway 66 into downtown Kirkland Lake. Northlander
The ''Northlander'' was a passenger train operated by the Ontario Northland Railway in Ontario, Canada. The ''Northlander'' operated six days per week year-round in both directions and connected Cochrane with Toronto. The train typically consisted of one engine, an auxiliary power unit, two coaches and a cafeteria lounge car. It ran on ONR tracks from Cochrane to North Bay and on CN tracks south of North Bay to Toronto. In March 2012, the Ontario Northland Transportation Commission announced plans to discontinue the ''Northlander'' and replace it with bus service (Routes 1 and 2). The final train ran on September 28, 2012. To push for the service's restoration, an advocacy group called All Aboard Northern Ontario was formed in October 2017. Kirkland Lake
Kirkland Lake is a town and municipality in Timiskaming District in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. The 2016 population, according to Statistics Canada, was 7,981. The community name was based on a nearby lake which in turn was named after Winnifred Kirkland, a secretary of the Ontario Department of Mines in Toronto. The lake was named by surveyor Louis Rorke in 1907. Miss Kirkland never visited the town, and the lake that bore her name no longer exists because of mine tailings. The community comprises Kirkland Lake (Teck Township), as well as Swastika, Chaput Hughes, Bernhardt, and Morrisette Twp. Kirkland Lake was built on gold, but it is equally well known for producing world-famous hockey players. Indeed, legendary hockey broadcaster Foster Hewitt called Kirkland Lake "the town that made the NHL."
