Sverre Lodgaard
Sverre Lodgaard is a Norwegian political scientist who has held several senior positions within government and non-governmental organizations, including the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI). Lodgaard specializes in peace, foreign and security policy, but has also worked on developing country issues. He has since the 2000s written extensively on nuclear arms control and disarmament issues and on Middle East affairs. He graduated from the University of Oslo in 1971; magister degree in political science and supportive degrees in sociology and economics (1971). He conducted research for some years at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) and as a fellow at the University of Oslo. From 1980 to 1986 he was director of European Security and Disarmament Studies at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), and from 1986 to 1992 returned to PRIO as its director. The Norwegian Nobel Committee ( no, Den norske Nobelkomité) selects the recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize each year on behalf of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel's estate, based on instructions of Nobel's will. Five members are appointed by the Norwegian Parliament. In his will, Alfred Nobel tasked the parliament of Norway with selecting the winners of the Nobel Peace Prize. At the time, Norway and Sweden were in a loose personal union. Despite its members being appointed by Parliament, the committee is a private body tasked with awarding a private prize. Oslo Center
The Oslo Center was founded by former Norwegian prime minister Kjell Magne Bondevik in January 2006. The purpose of the center is to work for world peace, human rights and inter-religious tolerance worldwide. The center cooperates closely with the Carter Center in Atlanta, the Kim Dae Jung Library in Seoul and the Crisis Management Initiative in Helsinki. Shortly after the announced opening of The Oslo Center, Bondevik told Norwegian newspaper ''Aftenposten'', that the center would focus primarily on negotiations between governments and take on the role as a peace mediator in conflict areas around the world.
