''Suzanne Vega'' is the debut studio album by American singer-songwriter Suzanne Vega. It was released on May 1, 1985 through A&M Records. The album was primarily recorded at Celestial Sound in New York City and was produced by Steve Addabbo and Lenny Kaye. The album's folk style and stripped-back arrangements deviated from the prevailing trends of the time, and helped to usher in a new era of singer-songwriters. ''Suzanne Vega'' was a critical success and helped Vega's rise to popularity. The album surpassed sales expectations by selling over 200,000 copies in the US and was certified platinum in the UK for sales of over 300,000 copies. " Marlene on the Wall", "Small Blue Thing" and "Knight Moves" were released as singles to promote the album, with the former becoming a top 30 hit in the UK upon a re-release in 1986. Suzanne Nadine Vega ( Peck; born July 11, 1959) is an American singer-songwriter best known for her folk-inspired music. Vega's music career spans almost 40 years. She came to prominence in the mid-1980s, releasing four singles that entered the Top 40 charts in the UK during the 1980s and 1990s, including "Marlene on the Wall", " Left of Center", "Luka" and "No Cheap Thrill". "Tom's Diner", which was originally released as an '' a cappella'' recording on Vega's second album, ''Solitude Standing'' (1987), was remixed in 1990 as a dance track by English electronic duo DNA with Vega as featured artist, and it became a Top 10 hit in over five countries. Frank Christian (born Frank P. Caputo, October 19, 1952 – December 24, 2012) was an American, Greenwich Village-based singer-songwriter and guitarist. His best-known song, "Three Flights Up" was recorded by Nanci Griffith for her Grammy award-winning 1992 release ''Other Voices, Other Rooms''. Christian also had much success as a sideman. He appeared on dozens of albums, backing such performers as Dave Van Ronk, Suzanne Vega, John Gorka, Nanci Griffith, and The Smithereens. He began his guitar studies with the jazz guitarist Roosevelt Span. He was a guitar teacher in New York City. An electric violin is a violin equipped with an electronic output of its sound. The term most properly refers to an instrument intentionally made to be electrified with built-in pickups, usually with a solid body. It can also refer to a violin fitted with an electric pickup of some type, although "amplified violin" or "electro-acoustic violin" are more accurate then. Darol Anger is an American violinist and founding member of The David Grisman Quintet. Career Darol Anger entered popular music at the age of 21 as a founding member of The David Grisman Quintet. Anger played fiddle to David Grisman's mandolin in The David Grisman Quintet's (DGQ) 1977 debut. He co-founded and named the Turtle Island String Quartet with David Balakrishnan in 1985 and performed, composed, and arranged for the chamber jazz group. He frequently collaborates with fellow DGQ alumnus Mike Marshall. Anger met pianist Barbara Higbie in Paris and formed a musical partnership with her.
