Sutton Forest
Sutton Forest is a small village in the Southern Highlands, New South Wales, Australia in Wingecarribee Shire. It is located 5 km southwest of Moss Vale on the Illawarra Highway. Sutton Forest was originally granted, then owned by Navy Chief officer, Captain John Nicholson who recently immigrated from Scotland to Australia. This privately owned estate was originally 700 acres, this is where John Nicholson lived and died. Sutton Forest is located in an agrarian setting and is surrounded by farms, vineyards and is home to manor homes and estates. It is in one of the oldest areas settled by Europeans in Australia after Sydney and is somewhat reminiscent of an English village due to the temperate Southern Highlands climate and high rainfall. Wingecarribee Shire
Wingecarribee Shire is the local government area of the Southern Highlands in the state of New South Wales, Australia. The Wingecarribee Shire is around southwest of the Sydney central business district and is part of regional Capital Country and to some extent can be considered part of the Southern Tablelands. Wingecarribee Shire covers an area of that is typically referred to as the ''Southern Highlands''. Wingecarribee Shire is an important catchment area for water supply to Sydney, Wollongong and the Northern Shoalhaven. The Council seat and Chambers is in Moss Vale. Whitley is a heritage-listed residence at 217 Oldbury Road, Sutton Forest, Wingecarribee Shire, New South Wales, Australia. It was built from 1887 to 1892. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. History The main house was erected between 1887 and 1892 as a country retreat for a Sydney judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, Sir William Owen. Hillview is a heritage-listed former residence and now boutique hotel at Old Illawarra Highway, Sutton Forest, Wingecarribee Shire, New South Wales, Australia. It was the official country residence of the Governor of New South Wales from 1882 to 1957. The house had formerly been known as Prospect. Golden Vale is a heritage-listed farm and country residence at Golden Vale Road, Sutton Forest, Wingecarribee Shire, New South Wales, Australia. It was built from 1868 to 1869. Sutton Forest Public School
Sutton Forest Public School was a school in Sutton Forest, New South Wales, Australia operating from 1880 to December 2014. The school emerged from a denominational school operated by the Church of England from ca. 1830. The number of students fluctuated through the years of its existence, but the school was finally closed due to low enrolment and a lack of demand in the area. History While the precise date that the school opened is not known, it was in operation by 1830, when it had 18 pupils. A small school, operated by the Church of England under the Denominational Schools Board, it grew to 42 by 1842. By 1846, it consisted of "two neat little whitened cottages" situated next to the Sutton Forest church, according to a ''Sydney Morning Herald'' article of the time. Peppers Manor House, Sutton Forest, New South Wales
Mount Broughton is a historic house located in , New South Wales, Australia. It is run commercially as Peppers Manor House. The house was built in 1878 by Henry Edward Kater and was the rural retreat for the Kater family for almost one hundred years. In 1978 it was restored and opened as a country house hotel, one of the first such hotels in NSW. Later, extensions were made to convert it to a hotel and conference centre. Early history The land surrounding Mount Broughton was originally granted to Dr Charles Throsby in 1822. Dr Throsby arrived in Sydney as a naval surgeon and later joined the famous explorer Hamilton Hume, a family friend in the exploration of the country around Sutton Forest. The Parish of Sutton Forest is a parish of the County of Camden in the Southern Highlands region of New South Wales.
