Sustainable Seattle
Sustainable Seattle is a non-profit organization that promotes sustainability in Central Puget Sound. It was officially founded as a non-profit in 1991. Sustainable Seattle was the first organization to create regional indicators for sustainability. This work influenced many cities and groups around the world and it works in sustainability indicators based on citizens’ values and goals for their communities. The public policy think tank, Redefining Progress, surveyed over 170 sustainability projects around the country and found that more than 90 of them used Sustainable Seattle as a model for their initiatives. For the first decade of its existence, Sustainable Seattle focused on creating regional sustainability indicators through grassroots activism. The Pollinator Pathway
The Pollinator Pathway is a participatory art, design and ecology social sculpture initiative founded by the artist and designer Sarah Bergmann. Its objective is to connect existing isolated green spaces and create a more hospitable urban environment for pollinators like bees with a system of ecological corridors of flowering plants by using existing urban infrastructure such as curb space and rooftops. Vicki Robin
Vicki Robin (born July 6, 1945) is an American writer and speaker. She is best known as the author of ''Your Money Or Your Life: 9 Steps to Transforming Your Relationship with Money and Achieving Financial Independence''. Early life Robin was born in Oklahoma, but grew up in Long Island, New York and attended Manhasset Secondary School, where she was a member of the Leaders Club and selected as "most likely to succeed" in the high school class of 1963. Jan Drago
Jan Drago (born May 12, 1940) is an American politician and educator from Seattle who has served on both Seattle City Council and King County Council. Personal history and education Prior to her election to Seattle City Council, Drago was schoolteacher (1973–1978) and later the owner of a Häagen-Dazs Ice Cream Shoppes franchise in downtown Seattle (1980-1991). She is a graduate of Douglass College, Rutgers University (B.A., Psychology). Richard Conlin is a former member of the Seattle City Council, first elected to council in 1997 and reelected in 2001, 2005, and 2009. Community building is a field of practices directed toward the creation or enhancement of community among individuals within a regional area (such as a neighborhood) or with a common need or interest. Sustainability
Specific definitions of sustainability are difficult to agree on and have varied in the literature and over time. The concept of sustainability can be used to guide decisions at the global, national, and individual levels (e.g. sustainable living). Sustainability is commonly described as having three dimensions (also called pillars): environmental, economic, and social. Many publications state that the environmental dimension (also called "planetary integrity" or "ecological integrity") is the most important, and, in everyday usage, "sustainability" is often focused on countering major environmental problems, such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, loss of ecosystem services, land degradation, and air and water pollution. Recycling
Recycling is the process of converting waste materials into new materials and objects. The recovery of energy from waste materials is often included in this concept. The recyclability of a material depends on its ability to reacquire the properties it had in its original state. It is an alternative to "conventional" waste disposal that can save material and help lower greenhouse gas emissions. It can also prevent the waste of potentially useful materials and reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reducing energy use, air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution (from landfilling).
