Susan Maughan
Susan Maughan (born Marian Maughan, 1 July 1938) is an English singer who released successful singles in the 1960s. Her most famous and successful song, " Bobby's Girl" (a cover of the Marcie Blane single), reached number three in the UK Singles Chart at Christmas time in 1962. Career Maughan was born in Consett, County Durham. The sleeve notes on her 1963 album, written by John Franz, stated that "Susan's family moved to Birmingham (in 1953) when Susan was 15. Consett
Consett is a town in County Durham, England, about south-west of Newcastle upon Tyne. It had a population of 27,394 in 2001 and an estimate of 25,812 in 2019. History Consett sits high on the edge of the Pennines. Its' name originates in the Old English ''Cunecsheafod'' ("Cunec's headland"), first recorded in the 13th century. In 1841, it was a village community of only 145, but it was about to become a boom town: below the ground were coking coal and blackband iron ore, and nearby was limestone. These three ingredients were needed for blast furnaces to produce iron and steel. Carol Deene (born Carole Carver; 3 August 1944) is an English pop singer and radio host who achieved success in the early 1960s. Biography Early career After appearing on Joan Regan's BBC TV programme ''Be My Guest'' in 1961,Larkin C., ''Virgin Encyclopedia of Sixties Music'', (Muze UK Ltd, 1997), , p. 148 at the age of 16, Deene was signed to the HMV label. She scored her first chart hit in late 1961, and three Top 40 hits on the UK Singles Chart in 1962. Recordings Deene's first hit was "Sad Movies (Make Me Cry)", a number 44 entry on the UK chart in October 1961. The song was a cover of a US hit written by John D. ''The Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club'' was a British television variety show produced by Granada Television from 1974 to 1977. It was set in a fictional working men's club in the North of England and was hosted by comedian Colin Crompton as the club's chairman. The show's compere was usually Bernard Manning, who as well as telling jokes and introducing acts often finished the show with a song. Crompton was frequently the butt of his jokes, acting as Manning's stooge.
