Susan Cox (artist)
Susan Cox is an American painter born in 1952. She is completed work in oil, acrylic, and watercolor mediums. Her work focuses on City Scenes and life and Landscapes en plein air. Her work has been showcased across Europe and the United States. Education and Teaching Susan Cox received a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Fine Arts and Ceramics from California State University Long Beach. During her time as an emerging artist, Cox worked as an art gallery sales consultant, interior design apprentice, and floral designer. Cox has also served as a juror for the Festival of the Arts in Laguna Beach in 1999 & 2006. Cox's art focuses on oil mediums and plein-air painting. In Winter 2009, Cox was a professor of plein-air painting at the Oceanside Museum of Arts. Her course was titled "A Breath of Fresh Air". ''En plein air'' (; French for 'outdoors'), or ''plein air'' painting, is the act of painting outdoors. This method contrasts with studio painting or academic rules that might create a predetermined look. The theory of 'En plein air' painting is credited to Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes (1750–1819), first expounded in a treatise entitled ''Reflections and Advice to a Student on Painting, Particularly on Landscape'' (1800), where he developed the concept of landscape portraiture by which the artist paints directly onto canvas ''in situ'' within the landscape. Oceanside Museum of Art is a fine arts museum located at 704 Pier View Way, Oceanside, California in northern San Diego County, California. The museum began holding exhibits in 1995, with a dedicated facility opening on October 6, 1997. It is housed in two buildings designed by Irving Gill and Frederick Fisher, modernist architects from southern California. The Muckenthaler House, renamed the Muckenthaler Cultural Center, is a large Spanish Colonial Revival style residence built in Fullerton, California, in 1925. Mission The mission of the Muckenthaler Cultural Center is to conserve the heritage of the Muckenthaler estate while offering exhibitions, performances and stimulating educational programs. History Commissioned at an original cost of $35,000, the Muckenthaler home was built by Walter and Adella Muckenthaler in 1925 atop a hill in Fullerton. The Pageant of the Masters is an annual festival held by the Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach, California. The event is known for its ''tableaux vivants'' or " living pictures" in which classical and contemporary works of art are recreated by real people who are made to look nearly identical to the originals through the clever application of costumes, makeup, headdresses, lighting, props, and backdrops. The Sawdust Art Festival, also known as The Sawdust or The Sawdust Festival, is an art festival held annually from late June through August in Laguna Beach, California.
