Susan Bickley
Susan Bickley is a British mezzo-soprano singer who performs in opera, Baroque and contemporary classical music. Personal life and education Susan Rochford Bickley was born into a Welsh family in Liverpool, England. Her father was a primary school deputy headmaster and her mother was a special needs teacher. Her younger brother Graham Bickley is an actor and singer. Bickley and her brother first began singing in church as children, accompanied by their father on the organ. She attended Quarry Bank Comprehensive School in Liverpool and then studied music at City University and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She later studied singing with Audrey Langford. In 1984 she married Anthony Castro and they have two children. Voice Bickley's voice is in the mezzo-soprano range. It has been described as having considerable range and expressivity. Solomon (Handel)
''Solomon'', HWV 67, is an oratorio by George Frideric Handel. The anonymous libretto – currently thought to have been penned by the English Jewish poet/playwright Moses Mendes (d.1758) – is based on the biblical stories of the wise king Solomon from the First Book of Kings and the Second Book of Chronicles, with additional material from ''Antiquities of the Jews'' by ancient historian Flavius Josephus. The music was composed between 5 May and 13 June 1748, and the first performance took place on 17 March 1749, with Caterina Galli in the title role at the Covent Garden Theatre in London, where it had two further performances. Handel revived the work in 1759. Welsh National Opera (WNO) ( cy, Opera Cenedlaethol Cymru) is an opera company based in Cardiff, Wales; it gave its first performances in 1946. It began as a mainly amateur body and transformed into an all-professional ensemble by 1973. Opera North is an English opera company based in Leeds. It premiered at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 1 May 1786. ''Les Troyens'' (; in English: ''The Trojans'') is a French grand opera in five acts by Hector Berlioz. The libretto was written by Berlioz himself from Virgil's epic poem the ''Aeneid''; the score was composed between 1856 and 1858. ''Les Troyens'' is Berlioz's most ambitious work, the summation of his entire artistic career, but he did not live to see it performed in its entirety. ''Le Grand Macabre'' (1974–1977, revised version 1996) is the only opera by Hungarian composer György Ligeti. The opera has two acts, and its libretto—based on the 1934 play ''La balade du grand macabre'' by Michel de Ghelderode—was written by Ligeti in collaboration with , director of the Stockholm puppet theatre. The original libretto was written in German as ''Der grosse Makaber'' but for the first production was translated into Swedish by Meschke under its current title. The libretto is by Nicola Francesco Haym, based on an earlier libretto by Antonio Salvi. ''Rodelinda'' has long been regarded as one of Handel's greatest works. ''Salome'', Op. 54, is an opera in one act by Richard Strauss. The libretto is Hedwig Lachmann's German translation of the 1891 French play '' Salomé'' by Oscar Wilde, edited by the composer. Strauss dedicated the opera to his friend Sir Edgar Speyer. The opera is famous (at the time of its premiere, infamous) for its " Dance of the Seven Veils". ''The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant'' is an opera in five acts composed by Gerald Barry to a libretto in English by Denis Calandra closely based on Rainer Werner Fassbinder's screenplay for the film of the same name.
