Susan's House
"Susan's House" is a song by American rock band Eels. It was released as the third single from their 1996 debut album, ''Beautiful Freak''. Content In his autobiography, Mark Oliver Everett states that Susan "wasn't a crazy girl, a rare exception at the time". Her house was in Pasadena, not a walkable distance from where Everett lived at the time. The song focuses on the problems in the area he walks through as he goes over to visit her. By the time of recording the song, he and Susan had already been apart a few years. Susan is also the subject of the song "Beautiful Freak" from the same album. The song samples the piano introduction from the 1974 Gladys Knight & the Pips track " Love Finds Its Own Way", written by Jim Weatherly, who, along with Jim Jacobsen, is credited as co-writing ''Susan's House'' on both the original single and the album. Eels (often typeset as eels or EELS) is an American Rock music, rock band, formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1991 by singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mark Oliver Everett, known by the stage name E. Band members have changed over the years, both in the studio and on stage, making Everett the only official member for most of the band's work. Eels' music is often filled with themes of family, death, and unrequited love. Since 1996, Eels has released fourteen studio albums, seven of which charted in the Billboard 200, ''Billboard'' 200. Gladys Knight & the Pips were an American R&B, soul and funk family music group from Atlanta, Georgia, that remained active on the music charts and performing circuit for over three decades starting from the early 1950s. Starting out as simply The Pips in 1952, derived from a cousin's nickname, the founding members were Gladys Knight, brother Merald "Bubba" Knight, sister Brenda Knight and cousins Eleanor Guest and William Guest. After a couple of years performing in talent shows, the group signed with Brunswick Records in 1957, recording a couple of singles that failed to chart. Brenda Knight and Eleanor Guest eventually left the group and were replaced by another cousin, Edward Patten, and a non-relative, Langston George in 1959. ''I Feel a Song'' is the thirteenth studio album recorded by American R&B group Gladys Knight & the Pips, released in November 1974 on the Buddah label. It was their third overall album for Buddah. The first single release, " I Feel a Song (In My Heart)", reached #1 R&B and #21 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100. The B-side, "Don't Burn Down the Bridge", also charted as a tag-along on the pop chart. A second single, "Love Finds Its Own Way", also charted, peaking at #47 pop and #3 R&B. The final single, a live medley recording of "The Way We Were"/"Try to Remember" was also a successful hit, peaking at #11 pop and #6 R&B. This remix also received moderate airplay on U.S. modern rock stations.
