Van Diemens Land
Van Diemen's Land was the colonial name of the island of Tasmania used by the British during the European exploration of Australia in the 19th century. A British settlement was established in Van Diemen's Land in 1803 before it became a separate colony in 1825. Its penal colonies became notorious destinations for the transportation of convicts due to the harsh environment, isolation and reputation for being inescapable. Macquarie Harbour and Port Arthur are among the most well-known penal settlements on the island. With the passing of the Australian Constitutions Act 1850, Van Diemen's Land (along with New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, and Western Australia) was granted responsible self-government with its own elected representative and parliament. In the early history of Western Australia, the office of surveyor general was one of the most important public offices. The first surveyor general, John Septimus Roe, was responsible for the laying out of many townsites, including Perth and Fremantle, and played a prominent role in the politics of the day. Another surveyor general, John Forrest, became Premier of Western Australia, and later a Cabinet minister in Australia's first federal government. William Nevin Tatlow Hurst
William Nevin Tatlow Hurst, ISO (11 April 1868 – 24 December 1946) was a senior Tasmanian civil servant. In 1925 he succeeded the Tasmanian Surveyor-General, E A Counsel, as the head of the Tasmanian Department of Lands and Surveys, although with the title of Secretary for Lands. The Companionship of the Imperial Service Order (ISO) was bestowed upon him in June 1932. At his retirement in 1938 he had been continuously employed in the department for fifty three years, having joined as a trainee draftsman on 1 July 1885. Tasmania's capital city, Hobart, was where he spent his life, with the suburb of New Town being his home at his birth in 1868, his marriage in 1899 and at his death in 1946. Henry Butler (politician)
Henry Butler (16 or 17 November 1821 – 22 August 1885), was a surgeon and politician in colonial Tasmania. Butler was the third son of Gamaliel Butler, solicitor, and was born in Cornhill, London, England. In 1823 the family emigrated to Van Diemen's Land (later renamed Tasmania). Butler was educated in England, and chose medicine as his profession, becoming a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1843, and in 1849 a fellow of that college. After studying at some of the hospitals on the Continent, he returned to Tasmania, and began the practice of his profession in Hobart. Butler contested the seat of Brighton in the old unicameral Tasmanian Legislative Council without success in 1851, however he was elected in 1854. On the introduction of free institutions in September 1856 he entered the new Tasmanian House of Assembly (lower house) as member for Brighton, holding the seat, apart from the period from November 1862 to October 1866, until his death.
