Surrealist Video Games
Surrealism is a cultural movement that developed in Europe in the aftermath of World War I in which artists depicted unnerving, illogical scenes and developed techniques to allow the unconscious mind to express itself. Its aim was, according to leader André Breton, to "resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality into an absolute reality, a super-reality", or ''surreality.'' It produced works of painting, writing, theatre, filmmaking, photography, and other media. Works of Surrealism feature the element of surprise, unexpected juxtapositions and ''Non sequitur (literary device), non sequitur''. However, many Surrealist artists and writers regard their work as an expression of the philosophical movement first and foremost (for instance, of the "pure psychic automatism" Breton speaks of in the first Surrealist Manifesto), with the works themselves being secondary, i.e. artifacts of surrealist experimentation. ''The Treachery of Images'' (french: La Trahison des Images, link=no) is a 1929 painting by Belgian surrealist painter René Magritte. It is also known as ''This Is Not a Pipe'' and ''The Wind and the Song''. Magritte painted it when he was 30 years old. It is on display at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The painting shows an image of a smoking pipe (tobacco), pipe. Below it, Magritte painted, "", French for "This is not a pipe". The theme of pipes with the text "Ceci n'est pas une pipe" is extended in ''Les Mots et Les Images'', ''La Clé des Songes'', ''Ceci n'est pas une pipe (L'air et la chanson)'', ''The Tune and Also the Words'', ''Ceci n’est pas une pomme'', and ''Les Deux Mystères''.
