In January 2005 Surpierre incorporated the formerly independent municipality of Praratoud, in January 2017 Surpierre incorporated Villeneuve and in January 2021 it incorporated Cheiry. History Surpierre is first mentioned in 1142 as ''Super Petram''. Cheiry Cheiry is first mentioned around 1184-85 as ''Chirie''. Its territory was enlarged in 2005 with the formerly independent municipality Chapelle. On 5 October 1994, 23 members of the cult the Order of the Solar Temple were found in dead in the farm La Rochette in Cheiry. Geography After the 2017 merger Surpierre had an area of . Baillival Castle (Surpierre)
Baillival Castle (Surpierre) is a bailiff's castle in the municipality of Surpierre of the Canton of Fribourg in Switzerland. It is a Swiss heritage site of national significance. History In the 12th century there was a fort at ''Surpetra'', though whether that was at the current castle site or another nearby location is unknown. The fief of Surpierre was owned by a noble family of the same name from 1142 until 1233. In the 13th century the de Cossonay family owned Surpierre and a number of surrounding villages. In the late 13th century a small castle was built on the site of the current one. A few elements of this castle were incorporated into the modern castle, including a square tower and the pointed arch windows in the chapel. By 1344 there was a small fortified village on the hill by the castle. During the 14th and 15th centuries the castle passed through a number of different owners. Chapelle, Broye
Chapelle ( frp, ) is a village and former municipality in the district of Broye in the canton of Fribourg, Switzerland. It was first recorded in 1363 as ''Cappella''. It was named ''Chapelle-près-Surpierre'' until 1953, when the name changed to Chapelle. The municipality also contained the villages Coumin-Dessus and Coumin-Dessous. It had 85 inhabitants in 1811, which increased to 129 in 1831. It then decreased to 120 in 1850, 113 in 1900, 117 in 1950 and 64 in 2000. Lucens () is a municipality in the Broye-Vully district in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland. In 2017 the former municipalities of Brenles, Chesalles-sur-Moudon, Cremin, Forel-sur-Lucens and Sarzens merged into the municipality of Lucens. History Lucens is first mentioned in 964 as ''in villa Losingus''. It was formerly known by the German name ''Losingen''. In 1969 the Lucens reactor, an underground nuclear reactor, began operations. It was a pilot project to test a heavy-water moderated, carbon dioxide gas-cooled reactor. Soon after the initial start up, an undetected blockage in one of the cooling pipes led to a partial fuel meltdown and massive radioactive contamination of the underground site.
