Surendranath Law College
Surendranath Law College (''Bengali'' :সুরেন্দ্রনাথ আইন কলেজ) formerly known as ''Ripon College'') is an postgraduate law college affiliated with the University of Calcutta. It was established in Kolkata in the Indian state of West Bengal in 1885 by a trust formed by the nationalist leader, scholar and educationist Surendranath Banerjee, a year after he founded Surendranath College. This is now regarded one of the oldest Law college of British India. History The first name of the college was Presidency School in 1882, when it was handed over to Sri Banerjee on 1 January 1884. That same year the Post-Graduate Department of Law was extended, and it was affiliated to the Calcutta University as an independent professional college in 1885. Banerjee renamed the school the Presidency Institution and brought it to the status of a college affiliated to the F.A. standard. Rajendra Prasad
Rajendra Prasad (3 December 1884 – 28 February 1963) was an Indian politician, lawyer, Indian independence activist, journalist & scholar who served as the first president of Republic of India from 1950 to 1962. He joined the Indian National Congress during the Indian Independence Movement and became a major leader from the region of Bihar and Maharashtra. A supporter of Mahatma Gandhi, Prasad was imprisoned by British authorities during the Salt Satyagraha of 1931 and the Quit India movement of 1942. Golam Rahman (writer)
Golam Rahman was a Bangladeshi journalist and writer. He was awarded Bangla Academy Literary Award for his contribution to Bengali literature. Early life Rahman was born on 28 November 1931 in Kolkata, West Bengal, British India. He studied law at Surendranath Law College but moved to Dhaka following the Partition of India and as a result could not finish his studies. He joined Jagannath College but dropped out before graduation. Career Rahman worked at ''Daily Ittehad'' and ''Daily Insaf'' while leaving in Kolkata. He edited the ''Madhumala'', a weekly. Phani Bhushan Majumder
Phani Bhushan Majumder was an Awami League politician and a former minister of the government of Bangladesh. Early life Phani Bhushan Majumder was born in 1901 at village Sendia in Rajoir Upazila of Madaripur. His father's name was Satish Chandra Majumdar. Shahidullah Kaiser
Shahidullah Kaiser (16 February 1927 – disappeared 14 December 1971) was a Bangladeshi novelist and writer. He was awarded Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1969, Ekushey Padak in 1983 and Independence Day Award in 1998. Khondakar Abu Taleb (1921-1971) was a Bangladeshi journalist who was killed by Pakistani Army in the Bangladesh Liberation and is considered a "martyr" in Bangladesh. Dhirendranath Datta
Dhirendranath Datta (2 November 1886 – disappeared 29 March 1971) was a Bengali lawyer by profession who was also active in the politics of undivided Bengal in pre-partition India, and later in East Pakistan (1947–1971). Early life Datta was born on 2 November 1886 in Ramrail, in Brahmanbaria District, Bengal Province (in today's Bangladesh). His father Jagabandhu Datta was a lawyer and introduced Dhirendranath to the legal profession from an early age. Panchanan Barma (1866–1935), also known as Thakur Panchanan or Panchanan Sarkar, was a Rajbanshi leader and social reformer from Cooch Behar, West Bengal, India. He dedicated his life for the improvement of backward class people, specifically for his own backward Rajbanshi community. Manmatha Nath Mukherjee
Sir Manmatha Nath Mukherjee (also spelt Mukherji or Mukerji; 28 October 1874 – 6 December 1942) was a Bengali judge of the Calcutta High Court and a distinguished jurist. Birendranath Sasmal
Birendranath Sasmal (বীরেন্দ্রনাথ শাসমল) (26 October 1881 - 24 November 1934) was a lawyer and political leader. He was known as "The Uncrowned King" of Midnapore and "Deshpran" because of his love and work for the country and for his efforts in the Swadeshi movement.
