Superior, Colorado
Superior is a statutory town in Boulder County, Colorado, United States, with a small, uninhabited segment of land area extending into Jefferson County. According to the 2020 census, the population of the city was 13,094. History Superior's history is one of coal mining. The first mines in the area were developed in the late 19th century. Coal was discovered on the Hake family farm in 1894, and recollections of members of pioneer families in Superior, including the Hakes and Autreys, are preserved as part of the Maria Rogers Oral History Program at the Carnegie Library for Local History in Boulder, Colorado. The town was reportedly named after its superior quality of coal. Mining was the major force in Superior's history until the Industrial Mine closed in 1945. Subsequently, many people moved out of the area and the Town evolved into a quiet ranching and farming community. 2021–2022 Boulder County Fires
The Marshall Fire was a destructive wildfire and urban conflagration that started on December 30, 2021, shortly after 11:00 a.m. MST, as a grass fire in Boulder County, Colorado. The fire killed two people and became the most destructive fire in Colorado history in terms of buildings destroyed. Background factors An unusually wet spring with above average growth of grass due to moist conditions, followed by an unusually warm and dry summer and fall, created abundant dry grass. This, combined with the lack of snow so far that winter, created ideal weather conditions for wildfires. Additionally, high winds were recorded in the area, with gusts of up to 115 miles per hour. The winds were driven by the mountain wave effect, and allowed for rapid spread of the fire. Maria Rogers Oral History Program
The Maria Rogers Oral History Program, or MROHP, collects and archives oral histories about Boulder County. Started in 1976, the program began with a handful of donated interviews, but now includes more than 1600 interviews, available both on the internet and at the Boulder Public Library's Carnegie Branch Library for Local History. The Woman Behind the Collection The Oral History Program is named for Maria M. Rogers, the woman who directed and developed the program for more than twelve years from 1985 to 1997. Colorado State Highway 170
State Highway 170 (SH 170) is a state highway in Colorado that connects Eldorado Springs and Superior. SH 170's western terminus is at Eldorado Canyon State Park, and the eastern terminus is at U.S. Route 36 (US 36) in Superior. Route description The road begins at the edge of Eldorado Canyon State Park at El Dorado Springs as a dirt road. Speed limit in this area is at 10 mph. As the route leaves Downtown Eldorado Springs, it becomes a paved road and the speed limit increases to 25 mph. . SH 170 then heads eastward, meeting County Road 67 before passing through a rural grassy area. The route then meets SH 93, where it becomes Marshall Drive, just north of Marshall Lake. The road then finds its eastern terminus at US 36, the Denver-Boulder Turnpike, passing through the city of Superior.
